Eligibility

You qualify for senior citizen housing if: - You are currently a resident of the Town of Hempstead. - You are 62 years of age or older (for senior citizen housing only). - Your annual income does not exceed $66,450 for single persons and $75,950 for couples. You qualify for the large family apartments if: - You are currently a resident of the Town of Hempstead. - You have at least one (1) child or are expecting one. - Your annual income does not exceed $75,950 for 2 persons; $85,450 for 3 persons; $94,900 for 4 persons; $102,500 for 5 persons.

Description

The Town of Hempstead Housing Authority owns and operates 1,309 apartments at 14 separate locations throughout the Town of Hempstead. The primary goal of the Housing Authority has been, and will continue to be, our commitment to provide safe, sanitary, housing in the most efficient and cost effective manner. There are efficiency (EFF) apartments for single persons over the age of 62; 1-bedroom (1 BR) apartments for couples with head of household 62 years or older. The Housing Authority also accepts applications for family apartments consisting of 2 to 4 bedrooms, available at 2 of our complexes.

Created to fulfill housing needs for the elderly and residents on limited incomes, the Housing Authority is the largest such agency in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and one of the largest in New York State. The Authority operates under the auspices of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, which provides construction funds for local housing at no cost to the town. Accepting applications for affordable housing for elderly (62+) and disabled adults (receiving SSD or SSI) in our 14 complexes as well as affordable housing for families available at 2 of our complexes.
