Manages more than 70 parks, preserves, museums, historic properties, and athletic facilities comprising 6,000 acres throughout the county. Parks include "active" parks, which are large and offer diverse activities, are heavily used by the public, and have full-time, on-site staff; and "passive" parks, which are far smaller and limited to local usage, in many cases consisting of a single athletic field, small lake or grassy area. Generally, active parks are open from early morning until dusk, with late hours in the summer and later hours for particular winter activities such as ice skating. Nassau county offers: Active Parks; Aquatic Center; Campgrounds; Dog Runs; Golf; Mitchel Athletic Complex; Nassau County Rifle & Pistol Range; NH Ice Center; Passive Parks; Arboretums; Preserves and Splash Sprinkler Parks. Museums provide a range of artistic and educational experiences for the public. The preserves offer examples of most of the ecosystems that can be found on Long Island, including Prairie-Hempstead Plains, which is an endangered habitat, and Upland Forest. The parks system provides a tremendous variety of experiences for residents and visitors.
