Responsible for enforcing all laws and ordinances, preventing crime, investigating criminal activity, apprehending, arresting and detaining suspects, presenting evidence, regulating traffic, investigating traffic accidents and engaging in other activities that protect lives and property and preserve peace in the community. Also has forensics, harbor/marine units, canine teams, bomb squad and hostage negotiation.

The Westchester County Department of Public Safety was created on July 1, 1979 via merger of the Westchester County Sheriff's Department and the Westchester County Parkway Police. The agency is comprised of approximately 300 sworn officers which provide highway patrol operations, general investigation units, bomb squad, Aviation and Marine Units, and a tactical response team, and is responsible for the Westchester County Police Academy.
