First, be sure that you are eligible for Direct File in New York State. Review New York eligibility for Direct File for further details. Next, if you are eligible for Direct File in New York State, check your eligibility for the IRS Direct File pilot. If you choose to use Direct File, after you file your federal return, you will be directed to the FileYourStateTaxes tool to file your New York state taxes.

The Direct File pilot program is open to New Yorkers reporting certain types of income and claiming certain credits and adjustments. The Direct File program is easy to use and can help eligible taxpayers file a 2023 federal tax return—for free—in English or Spanish, add tax information with step-by-step guidance, and connect with real-time online support from IRS customer service representatives. Direct File may be accessed from a smartphone, laptop, tablet, or desktop computer.
