TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES
Helps low income households with temporary assistance. Sample programs include: Funeral Assistance; HEAP; Emergency Assistance Programs; Family Assistance (FA) which provides cash assistance to needy families that include a minor child living with a parent (including families where both parents are in the household) or a caretaker relative. FA operates under federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) guidelines; Safety Net Assistance (SNA) which provides assistance to individuals and families who do not qualify for the FA program; Emergency Assistance to Adults (EAA) which provides assistance to individuals in receipt of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) who are facing emergency situations such as homelessness, utility or fuel emergencies, or other items of need; Emergency Assistance to Families (EAF) which provides assistance to families to meet emergency situations that are sudden, not foreseen, and beyond their control. Such needs may include but are not limited to, homelessness, fuel needs, and utility shut offs. The household must include a minor child who is without immediately accessible resources to meet his needs and Emergency Safety Net Assistance (E-SNA) which provides assistance to persons not eligible for recurring public assistance benefits, EAA, or EAF. The individual or family must present an emergency need and be without immediately available income or resources to meet the emergency. Committed to strengthening and preserving families by providing financial assistance and services to residents of Nassau County in accordance with state and federal regulations and laws. DSS is dedicated to providing quality service and maintaining the dignity and respect of those we serve. Specifically, the Department is responsible for: Providing aid to eligible recipients through the Family Assistance, Emergency Safety Net, Day Care, Employment, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly called food stamps), Medicaid, and Home Energy Assistance Programs. Establishing an initial child support obligation of a legally responsible individual through the Family Court, collecting support payments, enforcing and modifying existing support orders. Protecting children, adults, and families by enforcing the mandates of New York State Social Services Law and Providing the Department's services without regard to age, race, gender, disability, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
