Community Health Awareness Team (CHAT) - YWCA Jamestown
Partners with youth and youth-serving agencies in Chautauqua County to provide a variety of youth development programs that promote healthy adolescent sexuality. Also coordinates the Chautauqua County Positive Choices Coalition. Works to improve the environment for adolescents through the development and implementation of a coordinated community effort. Offers multiple evidence based programs that are intended to educate youth at an age appropriate level regarding sexual and reproductive health. The following programs contain curriculum that has shown evidence of changing adolescent risk-taking behavior and that align with the NYS Sex Education standards. 1. Project AIM is geared toward middle school youth (ages 11-14) and seeks to help youth form their "adult identity" by helping them articulate their future goals and think about how risky behavior choices may jeopardize their path toward achieving those goals. 2. Be Proud! Be Responsible! is intended for youth between the ages of 13-18 and provides them with the knowledge, motivation, and skills necessary to change their behaviors in a way that will reduce their risk of pregnancy or contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted disease. 3. Making Proud Choices! Provides teens the information, skills, and confidence to reduce their risk of HIV and unintended pregnancy. Youth will be empowered to change their behaviors and lower their risk by practicing abstinence or reducing their sexual risk. The Community Health Awareness Team (CHAT) empowers local youth with the knowledge, skills, and resources to make informed, responsible choices about their health and future. CHAT provides evidence-based programs that reduce the risk of teen pregnancy through comprehensive, age-appropriate education focused on decision-making, communication, and consent. This holistic, inclusive approach helps youth develop the cognitive and social skills necessary to build healthy relationships and make informed life choices. In addition to health education, CHAT supports positive youth development through leadership programs like Young Women Choosing Action. This 13-week initiative fosters self-awareness, mindfulness, and advocacy by guiding participants to explore their identities, build confidence, and create community impact through social action projects.
