Operates programs that protect the public from adulterated food, unhealthy living conditions and health nuisances. The department is also responsible for enforcing the Suffolk County Sanitary Code and the Local Laws of Suffolk County. The Bureau of Public Health Protection is comprised of five units: Food Protection, General Sanitation, Radiation Control, Temporary Residences, and Training & Plan Review. Responsible for implementing programs and providing information to help individuals live healthier lives by minimizing environmental health threats. Some efforts are targeted to the population at large, such as monitoring of public and private drinking water supplies, food safety in restaurants, fire safety in hotels, and permitting of mass gatherings. Other programs target specific needs such as interventions to prevent illness from rabies, lead poisoning, failing septic systems, and sale of tobacco products to minors.

Assists individuals with filing complaints and investigates problems regarding food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, tobacco, and biologic-based items. If any of these item are purchased and cause harm, have adverse effects which have not be fore-warned, or other problems occur due to seller or manufacturer error or neglect.

The Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) is responsible for inspecting and permitting over 1000 various food service establishments (FSE)s, including restaurants, cafeterias, food trucks, and food stands. Staff also investigate complaints from the public regarding cleanliness or suspected illness after visiting a facility.

Monitors and inspects public facilities and investigates complaints of food-borne and water supply-related illnesses, as well as injuries. In addition, the division responds to residential sanitation nuisance complaints and permits sewage disposal systems, and also inspects and issues permits for restaurants, motels, campgrounds, swimming pools, etc.

• Conducts inspections of food manufacturers, grocery stores, warehouses, bottling plants.

• Evaluates and inspects food labeling and advertising.

• Seizes unfit or adulterated food.

• Licenses food operators.

• Samples food products for analysis.

Inspects food service establishments, investigates foodborne disease outbreaks, responds to complaints, and provides training for food industry personnel. Under this jurisdiction, the Nassau County Department of Health permits over 5,700 food serving establishments in Nassau County, including restaurants, delis, mobile food trucks, schools, senior feeding units, and food vending units.
