There is a growing need for skilled technicians and specialists who can enter this exciting field as growers, budtenders, dispensary staff, product managers, and marketing/sales associates. Offered as an online program, the Certificate in Cannabis Production and Management requires students to complete 24 credit hours which includes three courses in cannabis science and production, three courses in the business of legalized cannabis, one course that explores the economics of the cannabis market, and one course that addresses medicinal and health-related issues to legalized cannabis. Any health care provider who can prescribe controlled substances in New York State, is qualified to treat the patient’s serious condition, and completes a two to four-hour course on medical cannabis, can certify patients. Patients certified by their health care provider can register with the Medical Cannabis Program. There is no patient registration fee and patients can designate caregivers. The patient will receive a registry ID card that lets them buy medical cannabis from a dispensary in New York State. Cannabinoid hemp products include many CBD products available for purchase today, including tinctures, oils, topicals, pills, capsules, and food or beverages that are intended for human consumption.

This law sets out a framework that will comprehensively regulate cannabis in New York State in a manner that will protect public health and safety, while promoting social equity and economic development. The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) will license cultivators, processors, distributors and dispensaries to grow and sell cannabis in New York. To protect consumer safety, there will be laboratory testing and packaging and labeling requirements for cannabis products. The Office will create a social and economic equity program to encourage small businesses and communities disproportionally harmed by disparate drug enforcement to participate in the new industry. The Office will develop rules and regulations for the adult-use industry. Please be aware the laws pertaining to adult use may not apply to medical cannabis usage.
