The County Department(s) of Probation and Corrections work to preserve the safety of the citizens and reintegration of offenders back into the community.

The Pretrial Release program aims to reduce the frequency of unnecessary incarceration in the jail by assessing the defendant’s qualifications for release on his/her own recognizance, based on non-financial conditions.

Conducts pre-sentence and pre-dispositional investigations for all courts in Oswego County, supervises persons sentenced by the courts to probation and persons released from Oswego County Jail by conditional release, handles Family Court intakes, and collects and disburses restitution monies for crime victims.

Provides public safety through formal supervision and support for individuals who have been convicted of an offense and released into the community under the supervision of a probation officer.

Preparation of investigative pre-disposition reports for Family Court and the supervision of adults and juveniles placed on probation by the Family Court.

* Provides probation services for juveniles and adults. Intake, investigations, pre-sentence reports, community service, supervision, conciliation, social treatment. * Administration and collection of court-ordered restitutions and reparations.

Provides supervision of juveniles and adults who have been sentenced to probation including electronic monitoring and overseeing restitution payments. Offers juvenile diversion counseling and programming. The department also prepares pre-sentence investigations/reports for criminal and family courts as ordered by the courts.

Provides probation which is an alternative to incarceration, where those convicted of misdemeanors or some felonies meet with someone on a weekly basis.

Supervises juvenile delinquent offenders placed on probation or during the intake/diversion procedure.

Recognizes the importance of sustained employment for individuals under community supervision. Probation assists area employers to ask questions of Probation Officers about work schedules and other work environmental related issues. The Probation Department’s primary function is to provide community based supervision for adult and juvenile offenders.

Regulates and provides technical assistance and training to probation departments in 57 counties and New York City; trains probation officers employed by these local agencies; and oversees and develops standards for alternatives to incarceration programs administered by government and not-for-profit organizations and agencies across the state. Also oversees and funds 20 county-based, Re-entry Task Forces, composed of community-based organizations that provide housing, treatment and employment services to individuals returning from state incarceration to their communities. ##REENTRY##

Conducts Pre-Sentence and Pre-Plea investigations and reports for the Criminal Courts, provides supervision services to offenders placed on probation by the Criminal Courts. The Special Services Unit consists of Sex Offender Services, Drug Court, Alternatively Sentenced Programs, ROR/RUS Services and Domestic Violence Supervision Services.

Sentencing alternative for criminal courts to impose upon eligible offenders that requires the performance of community service in place of time incarcerated in the county jail and may be imposed as a condition of probation or conditional discharge. Public and not-for-profit agencies are encouraged to participate as work sites for this restorative justice program.

Responsible for the collection and disbursement of court ordered restitution. In addition to collection of restitution for crime victims, Probation collects fees imposed by the Suffolk County Legislature for Probation investigations, supervision, drug-testing, and electronic monitoring.
