The Probation Department’s primary function is to provide community based supervision for adult and juvenile offenders.

Provides probation which is an alternative to incarceration, where those convicted of misdemeanors or some felonies meet with someone on a weekly basis.

Conducts Pre-Sentence and Pre-Plea investigations and reports for the Criminal Courts, provides supervision services to offenders placed on probation by the Criminal Courts. The Special Services Unit consists of Sex Offender Services, Drug Court, Alternatively Sentenced Programs, ROR/RUS Services and Domestic Violence Supervision Services.
Sentencing alternative for criminal courts to impose upon eligible offenders that requires the performance of community service in place of time incarcerated in the county jail and may be imposed as a condition of probation or conditional discharge. Public and not-for-profit agencies are encouraged to participate as work sites for this restorative justice program.

Supervises juvenile delinquent offenders placed on probation or during the intake/diversion procedure.
Recognizes the importance of sustained employment for individuals under community supervision. Preparation of pre-sentence investigations and reports for criminal courts and the supervision of adults sentenced to probation, including specialized supervision of sex offenders, DWIs, and youthful offenders.

Supervises criminal offenders sentenced to probation and administers diversion programs through the Pre-Trial Release Program and Community Service Program.
Supervises individuals placed on probation; completes pre-sentence investigations for the courts; assists individuals in accessing Family Court/custody issues; juvenile delinquency; persons in need of supervision (JD/PINS); screens pretrial defendants for release from jail. ##REENTRY##
Regulates and provides technical assistance and training to probation departments in 57 counties and New York City; trains probation officers employed by these local agencies; and oversees and develops standards for alternatives to incarceration programs administered by government and not-for-profit organizations and agencies across the state. Also oversees and funds 20 county-based, Re-entry Task Forces, composed of community-based organizations that provide housing, treatment and employment services to individuals returning from state incarceration to their communities. ##REENTRY##
