Protects life and property and ensures the safety of the boating public on the 500 square miles of navigable waterways in the Police District, from the Connecticut state line which bisects the Long Island Sound, to the New York state line three miles south of Fire Island in the North Atlantic Ocean. Land areas covered include Fire Island and Jones Island barrier beaches and the islands of the Great South Bay. Marine units also respond to water and ice rescues on the inland lakes, ponds and streams of the District. Barrier beach units, boats and the SCUBA team are available 24 hours a day. In addition to normal enforcement duties, Marine officers enforce the NYS Navigation Law and the Environmental Conservation Law, as well as local ordinances unique to the waterways and barrier beach. The Suffolk Police Marine Bureau aggressively enforces the New York State's boating while intoxicated (BWI) laws. The Marine Bureau should be notified of any water-related incidents. We should also be informed of any unusual activity in waterfront areas which you may observe, such as patterns of larcenies, suspicious persons or boats, so that we may direct our patrols. All Marine Patrol vessels and our headquarters at Timber Point maintain a watch on Marine VHF Channel 16. Please call 911 or 631-854-8382 for non-emergencies involving quality of life, questions about our services, or if you can provide information concerning crimes or other police matters.

Act as a liaison between the school administration, students, and the Police Department. SROs provide a safe learning environment in schools, contribute valuable resources to school staff members, and foster positive relationships with youth and the community. SROs work with school officials in identifying at-risk youth, then mentor and guide them to resources within their community to help form more positive behaviors and choices. SCPD has a Spanish speaking SRO assigned to the Community Relations Bureau to help foster relationships with the Spanish speaking community within Suffolk County. School Resource Officers conduct presentations to high schools and middle schools across the county regarding various safety topics, including, but not limited to, Internet Safety, The Dangers of Drugs and Alcohol, Vehicle Safety, What To Do When Stopped by the Police and Opportunities of Employment within the Suffolk County Police Department. SROs also conduct programs in Elementary Schools such as 911 Awareness and Stranger Danger. SROs participate in after school activities such as sports, cooking, hiking and fishing. SROs also organize field trips such as Police Week and assist at college visits with school personnel, providing students with the ability to develop a close relationship with their SRO. Programs can be tailored and every effort will be made to accommodate the needs of each individual school based on current events and local issues.
