Legal aid attorneys are assigned to family court and criminal court matters when the person needing representation is income eligible. Eligibility requirements for low income status are confidential, callers need to call for an eligibility screening. Does not handle divorce, separation or initial support cases, paternity for petitioner, parole, or juvenile cases.

The Family Law Division represents the Department of Social Services in Family Court on matters of paternity, support, child abuse and neglect, foster care, severance of parental rights, persons in need of supervision (PINS) and juvenile delinquency (JD) cases. Works cooperatively with the County Attorney's office with regards to County matters in Family Court.

LAS provides free legal counseling and representation for low-income individuals who need assistance in civil cases, which includes, government benefits, unemployment insurance, disability, health care, housing, family law matters, consumer problems, children's legal issues and immigration matters.
