STUDENT WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM | SCHENECTADY ARC

Students in the Mohonasen, Niskayuna, Schalmont, and Schenectady City Central School districts with disabilities are offered hands-on experience at local business while learning work skills. Offers training from job coaches and are transported to and from work sites by the participating school district. Services include work habits, job seeking skills, and different career areas.

BARRY TECH | BARRY TECH

Each year, high school students from all parts of Nassau County choose to add Barry Tech to their high school experience. In addition to a high school diploma, these students want a head start in learning skills needed for employment and/or more direction in what they want to study at college. A successful year or two at Barry Tech can enable you to: enter the world of work after graduation; continue advanced career studies in a technical training course and attend a two- or four-year college. Barry Tech courses are taught in environments that simulate the real world. Classes may be held in an airplane hangar, horse training stable, carpentry shop or video production studio. Courses focus on doing things, rather than just reading or hearing about them. In addition to taking academic courses leading to a diploma, every student attending a public high school in New York State is entitled to enroll in an occupational course of his or her choosing. Barry Tech offers about 40 different courses. A wide variety of students attend Barry Tech. Many are excellent students in their home schools and enjoy the professional atmosphere Barry Tech offers. Others discover that Barry Tech's learning approach works well for them and often find their grades show significant improvement. Barry Tech School Hours: A.M. classes - 7:50 to 10:20 and P.M. classes - 11:50 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. Barry Tech courses provide you with both theory and practical application. You explore career options, and you are encouraged to learn at your own pace. You will gain valuable experience while learning about the world of work. In this kind of atmosphere, you begin to understand and accept the uniqueness of your abilities. At the same time the classroom experience helps you develop and expand your skills. You learn to work as part of a team dealing with a wide range of situations, building confidence as a natural outcome. Barry Tech teachers are experienced in both subject matter and the world of work. They are eager to share their skills and experiences, and they work hard to help you succeed. Students and their families do not pay tuition. However, purchase of individual equipment, work clothes and/or materials may be required for a particular course. SPECIAL CAREER EDUCATION | ISLIP CAREER CENTER

Serves students with disabilities from the component school districts. This program provides a self-contained learning environment with modifications as determined by the Committees on Special Education (i.e., 12-1-1 and 8-1-1). The Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center, the Islip Career Center and Harry B. Ward Technical Center serve high school students who are 15.5 (15 years and 6 months) of age by September 1st until the age of 21. Special Career Education (SCE) creates opportunities for all students by providing them with the technical and academic skills needed to prepare for future employment and a successful path to college or other post-secondary programs. SCE provides technical training to prepare students for a successful career. The structured training gives students the tools needed to be successful in a job after high school and/or further post-secondary education. Each student is encouraged to explore various areas of study and to develop the essential skills to feel competent in entering today's competitive job market, while helping them to learn how to cope with their disabilities in the workplace. COSMETOLOGY LICENSING COURSE | WESTERN SUFFOLK BOCES WILSON TECH NORTHPORT CAMPUS

Offers a 1000hr course that will prepare you for your NYS License in Cosmetology. Students enjoy hands on learning practicing on classmates, mannequins and clinic clients as they study hairstyling, coloring, perms and relaxers, make-up techniques, manicures and business practices. Successful completion of the Cosmetology program at Western Suffolk BOCES prepares you to sit for the New York State Cosmetology licensing exam and includes Hair Extensions certification. If you lack hours to meet NYS licensing requirements, you may be able to enroll in our State Board Preparation class and take the hours you need. REGIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL | WESTERN SUFFOLK BOCES CONFERENCE CENTER

Offers remedial courses for students in grades 6–12 to make up deficiencies in academic work. This wide variety of remedial courses can benefit students with low or failing grades. These courses help to address regression or summer slide in order to prepare students for upcoming courses. This does not replace a full course year. Residents within the ten (10) participating districts (listed below) whose children are registered in public, private or parochial schools, grades 6-12, are eligible to attend, with permission of their home school principal or designee. Non-resident students (in districts not listed below) are permitted to register after all residents are accommodated. Participating Districts for 2022 include: Babylon UFSD; Commack UFSD; Deer Park UFSD; Elwood UFSD; Huntington UFSD; Kings Park CSD; North Babylon UFSD; Northport-East Northport UFSD; South Huntington UFSD and Wyandanch UFSD (Regents Exams Only). CARMAN ROAD SCHOOL | CARMAN ROAD SCHOOL

Provides comprehensive educational services for students with multiple disabilities including students with physical and developmental impairments as well as students with autism spectrum disorders, aged 5 to 21. All students are placed in small ratio classes allowing for a true individualized learning experience. Multiple methodologies of teaching are used in conjunction with state-of-the-art technology to provide stimulating educational experiences for all students. Language, academic readiness, social competence and activities of daily living are taught within a structured, aided language classroom environment. Trained staff use visual strategies combined with sensory activities and technology to encourage the growth of communication and interpersonal skills. Learning is enriched through clubs, specialized programs, community involvement, field trips and sports programs. Carman Road utilizes a collaborative team approach including push-in related services enabling staff to provide students with individualized plans to address their needs. Support services are provided by physical and occupational therapists, speech teachers, school psychologists, school social workers as well as nursing staff and a consulting physician. Parents are active participants in their child’s education and participate in ongoing training and support groups enabling them to make connections with one another and share resources.
