Provides a nurturing and academically invigorating environment for students who have experienced difficulty relating to peers and/or adults in a traditional school setting due to their social and emotional needs. Iris Wolfson fosters acceptance, stimulates academic achievement, encourages self-reliance, practices tolerance, and motivates students to meet their highest potential. Iris Wolfson is modeled after mainstream educational settings. Courses are departmentalized and the instructional program is aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. Students have the opportunity of earning college credits through a partnership with Farmingdale State College (SUNY). Students are expected to earn a high school diploma. Various electives are offered to stimulate thought, meet graduation requirements, reinforce content material, foster independent living, and develop personal management skills. Iris Wolfson primarily serves students with emotional disabilities (i.e. Generalized Anxiety Disorders and Depression), assorted learning disabilities, and spectrum disorders whose needs most closely resemble those found in district-based programs. Instruction is modified and individualized to addresses students' cognitive levels and learning styles. Instructional and work-based learning opportunities are also provided to assist students pursuing a Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential. Each year, high school students from all parts of Nassau County choose to add Barry Tech to their high school experience. In addition to a high school diploma, these students want a head start in learning skills needed for employment and/or more direction in what they want to study at college. A successful year or two at Barry Tech can enable you to: enter the world of work after graduation; continue advanced career studies in a technical training course and attend a two- or four-year college. Barry Tech courses are taught in environments that simulate the real world. Classes may be held in an airplane hangar, horse training stable, carpentry shop or video production studio. Courses focus on doing things, rather than just reading or hearing about them. In addition to taking academic courses leading to a diploma, every student attending a public high school in New York State is entitled to enroll in an occupational course of his or her choosing. Barry Tech offers about 40 different courses. A wide variety of students attend Barry Tech. Many are excellent students in their home schools and enjoy the professional atmosphere Barry Tech offers. Others discover that Barry Tech's learning approach works well for them and often find their grades show significant improvement. Barry Tech School Hours: A.M. classes - 7:50 to 10:20 and P.M. classes - 11:50 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. Barry Tech courses provide you with both theory and practical application. You explore career options, and you are encouraged to learn at your own pace. You will gain valuable experience while learning about the world of work. In this kind of atmosphere, you begin to understand and accept the uniqueness of your abilities. At the same time the classroom experience helps you develop and expand your skills. You learn to work as part of a team dealing with a wide range of situations, building confidence as a natural outcome. Barry Tech teachers are experienced in both subject matter and the world of work. They are eager to share their skills and experiences, and they work hard to help you succeed. Students and their families do not pay tuition. However, purchase of individual equipment, work clothes and/or materials may be required for a particular course. Serves students with disabilities from the component school districts. This program provides a self-contained learning environment with modifications as determined by the Committees on Special Education (i.e., 12-1-1 and 8-1-1). The Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center, the Islip Career Center and Harry B. Ward Technical Center serve high school students who are 15.5 (15 years and 6 months) of age by September 1st until the age of 21. Special Career Education (SCE) creates opportunities for all students by providing them with the technical and academic skills needed to prepare for future employment and a successful path to college or other post-secondary programs. SCE provides technical training to prepare students for a successful career. The structured training gives students the tools needed to be successful in a job after high school and/or further post-secondary education. Offers three pathways to earn an HSE Diploma: The GED® Program; The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) and Regents - HSE Examination Pathway’. THE GED® Program; Instruction is based on the content of the GED® exam, which includes Math, Reading, Writing Social Studies and Science. While you are attending the GED® program you will explore Adult Education career choices which you will be able to attend while you are earning your HSE diploma. All classes include Digital Literacy, job readiness training workshops on various topics such as business and finance, health literacy, debt management and financial literacy. Eastern Suffolk BOCES students have the opportunity to take the GED® exam at our Bellport location. The National External Diploma Program (NEDP); is an applied performance assessment system that evaluates reading, writing, math and workforce readiness skills of participants in life and work contexts. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a local high school diploma. The NEDP :assesses high school-level skills, awarding a New York State High School Equivalency diploma so graduates can meet their academic and career goals; is designed for self-directed students with life and work experiences and a general familiarity with the computer; offers flexible scheduling and confidentiality; evaluates 70 competencies in ten content areas including Financial Literacy, Health Literacy, Civic Literacy, Geography, History, Science, and Twenty-First Century Workplace Skills and assesses competencies that are based on skills outlined in the Common Core College and Career Readiness standards. The Regents - HSE Examination Pathway; Students in our program who have passed NYS Regents examinations with a score of 65 or greater in Mathematics, English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies and/or Science will have the opportunity to substitute those passing scores on a maximum of four of the five (5) corresponding GED® subtests (Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Social Studies and Science. Nassau BOCES has partnered with The LEARN Center to offer a solution that will protect you or your business from OSHA/NYC DOB safety violations. New laws and regulations are requiring that operating engineers be certified in the safe operation of heavy equipment. Certification is available on the backhoe, bulldozer, excavator, front-end loader and skid-steer. This 7-hour evaluation course consists of a 4-hour safety class and evaluation of the operator skills through practical exams for up to 3-hours. Offers a school which is designed for students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. The instructional program, which is aligned to the New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, builds confidence and capabilities of students and focuses on developing communication skills and personal independence. Research-based methodologies, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual strategies, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communications systems, functional behavioral assessment and positive behavioral supports are utilized in this program. The Rosemary Kennedy School consists of the elementary, middle and high school classes as well as district-based classes which provide mainstreaming opportunities for students. Community-based instruction is an essential part of the curriculum and compliments traditional classroom learning. Students participate in recreational activities (libraries, bowling), life skills (grocery shopping, restaurants), volunteer work sites (Mercy Hospital, Hofstra University) and vocational enclaves in the community (fast food restaurants, retail stores). Each student is educated by an interdisciplinary team comprised of the classroom teacher, teacher aides, psychologist, social worker, related service personnel, curriculum teachers and administrators. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child's education through daily communication notebooks, conferences, visits, parent training sessions and parent support groups. Transition planning for students from ages 12 to 21 is facilitated by vocational rehabilitation counselors and social workers in coordination with students and their families prior to graduation.
