Central Service Technicians are responsible for a variety of vital services throughout a healthcare facility. They are experts in the care and sterilization of surgical instruments in hospitals, surgical centers, physician offices, and more. The program is designed to prepare entry-level technicians, and may also serve as a review for practicing Central Service Technicians who wish to become certified. The program will focus on the scientific principles of infection control, the cleaning, processing, and sterilization of medical and surgical instruments, storage, distribution, inventory control and patient care equipment management. Offers a program that was created to assist students and individuals with disabilities beyond the classroom. The Supported Employment initiative has been empowering students and other individuals with disabilities by assisting employers in recruiting qualified workers with disabilities and training them for entry-level positions. The program uses a person-centered planning approach whereby an individual’s unique interests and abilities are taken into consideration during the job development phase. The Nassau BOCES staff canvasses community businesses for openings, matching individual’s strengths with employer needs. Supported workers earn at least minimum wage for entry-level positions. Vocational rehabilitation counselors and job coaches work together with employers and individuals ensuring that the best possible fit between job and employee is met for a win-win situation. When an individual first starts a job, the job coach works one-on-one with the newly hired worker teaching all tasks involved in the job as well as the soft skills necessary to fit in with the culture of the business. The job coach remains in place full time initially until the employee has successfully learned to work independently and then gradually fades to several visits per month to make sure things are going smoothly. Often, internships participated in while in school lead to actual paid employment. Nassau BOCES provides long-term, follow-along support for these workers, their families and employers through grants from New York State Department of Education (ACCES-VR) and the New York State Office of People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). Offers this 1200-hour program for you to prepare to take the National Certifying Examination as a Surgical Technologist. A Surgical Technologist works closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist and registered nurse to set up and assist in all type of surgical procedures. You will learn how to perform many duties that help keep the operating room functioning safely before, during and after operations. Practice the skillful handling and passing of surgical instruments and supplies, sterilizing operating room equipment and maintaining inventory in BOCES’ simulated Operating Room. BOCES’ program offers a low student-to-teacher ratio for highly personalized instruction. Students are assigned to a clinical site at one of Long Island’s excellent health care facilities and spend 590 hours working under the guidance of an experienced health care professional. Enables students to enrich their education through additional courses; make up work for courses they failed or were unable to complete during the school year; complete high school programs in less than the time normally required; or improve their competencies in basic skills. It also provides for the administration of Regents exams in accordance with the Commissioner's regulations. Any two school districts that house their summer school population at a common site may participate in the Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School on a BOCES-aidable basis. The courses offered at any particular site are determined by the participating school districts in collaboration with Nassau BOCES, and may include remedial secondary courses and short-term academic or exploratory enrichment subjects at the elementary and secondary level.
