RABIES PREVENTION PROGRAM | MONTGOMERY COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The Rabies Prevention Program has someone on duty 24 hours a day, every day of the year. This program investigates and monitors all suspect or confirmed rabies cases. Low cost dog-cat-ferret vaccination clinics are held throughout the county to protect pets. The community health nurses and community health worker provide education regarding rabies to schoolchildren. Twelve vaccination clinics are held at various sites in the county. Four are free rabies clinics for Montgomery County residents.

Rabies Information and Free Clinics | Chemung County Health Department - Main Site

Offers regularly scheduled rabies clinics throughout the county for cats, dogs and ferrets. Also provides information about rabies and animal bites/exposures. Clinics are provided in cooperation from the Chemung County SPCA and Health Department. Takes and responds to reports of rabid animals and bites. If bitten, scratched or have had contact with the saliva of an animal that is believed rabid, wash the wound immediately and contact a health care provider. If treatment is recommended, call immediately to determine where treatment should be received. If there is any chance of exposure to a bat through an inapparent bite, for example, a bat had direct contact with someone, or was in a room with a sleeping individual call immediately to discuss the situation.

Rabies control encompasses exposure follow ups for humans and domestic animals through contact investigations, pre and post-exposure treatments, animal confinements and quarantines, laboratory specimen submissions, vaccination clinics for domestic animals, and community education. Vector control monitors insect-related diseases such as West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease through a variety of functions such as species surveillance and public education.

RABIES CONTROL PROGRAM | ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Offers free rabies vaccination clinics for owners of dogs, ferrets, and cats. Owners are required to keep pets on a leash or in a carrier and bring their pet's past rabies shot records.

Provides post- exposure treatment to humans when exposure occurs. Confinement of domesticated cats, dogs, ferrets, and livestock is conducted as needed to reduce the spread of rabies.

NYS Public Health Law requires that all puppies and kittens get their first rabies shot at 3 months of age. They also need to get a booster shot at 1 year old, and again every three years.

HERKIMER COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING SERVICE | HERKIMER COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING SERVICE

* Provides public health services that include:
  • Rabies Prevention (receive notification of all dog bites in the county and work with the person that was bitten to make sure they get screened for rabies risk and the need for post-exposure prophylaxis).
  • Lead Poisoning Prevention (works with families of children at risk for, or with an elevated blood lead level to reduce that child's level). Testing is not provided by public health but a referral is made to the NYS office.

RABIES PROGRAMS | DUTCHESS COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF BEHAVIORAL AND COMMUNITY HEALTH - BEACON DISTRICT OFFICE

DBCH offers information and public awareness of rabies. Also provides the preventive vaccines for domestic pets, and post exposure vaccines to people. If anyone suspects an animal is rabid, contact the Department of Health or the local police department immediately.

ZOONOTIC DISEASES | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH - DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Investigates the control and the spread of mosquitoes through surveillance of mosquito breeding areas, preventing the development of adult mosquitoes, trapping adult mosquitoes, responding to complaints, treating infested areas and testing the trapped mosquitoes for presence of disease. Also Nassau County DOH investigates all reported animal bites. Nassau County Public Health law requires that pets be vaccinated against rabies. This includes, but is not limited to, dogs, cats, and ferrets. Medical providers treating a person who has suffered an animal bite are required to report the incident to the Department. To report a bite incident, please call 516-227-9663 during normal business hours or 516-742-6154 after business hours and on weekends. Rapidly identifies and isolates a rabid animal and prevent further transmission to humans or other animals. In addition the Bureau helps to prevent the spread of arthropod-borne diseases including viral encephalitis, malaria, and tick-borne diseases including, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease and Tularemia. Surveillance is conducted to determine the presence of various species and prevalence of these pathogens in our arthropod population and investigate health threats of arthropod-borne diseases to Suffolk County residents.
