The department is also responsible for enforcing the Suffolk County Sanitary Code and the Local Laws of Suffolk County. The Bureau of Public Health Protection is comprised of five units: Food Protection, General Sanitation, Radiation Control, Temporary Residences, and Training & Plan Review. The Environmental Health Division is dedicated to protecting the citizens and visitors of Erie County from biological, chemical, and physical hazards that may be present in food, water, and the built environment. Environmental Health sanitarians, engineers, nurses, educators and vector control workers: - Conduct inspections and investigations - Educate and motivate the public to prevent environmental hazards - Provide medical case management for children diagnosed with lead poisoning - Provide timely environmental health information in times of emergency - Provide assistance and information in cases of potential rabies exposures - Review plans and advise the public in environmentally safe construction, development and upgrades to facilities - Assist in the control of disease-causing vectors - Enforce applicable local, state, and national codes, and regulations to protect public health

Responsible for septic systems, inspections and permit issuance, drinking water testing, public health hazards and nuisances, clean indoor air enforcement, onsite wastewater treatment system regulation, rabies investigations and vaccinations, insect control, West Nile Virus surveillance. Rabies vaccinations: Conducts free rabies vaccination clinics for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets in several locations across Cattaraugus County. All Cattaraugus County residents are eligible for these free vaccinations. Notices will be posted on the Cattaraugus County website, through radio, newspaper ads, fliers on community boards around the County. Offers a course that is designed for personnel in the private and public sector interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health outreach program to their employees and other interested groups. Special emphasis is placed upon those topics that are required in the 10- and 30-hour programs, as well as on those that are most hazardous, using OSHA standards as a guide. Course participants are briefed on effective instructional approaches and the effective use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the Outreach Program and to conduct both a 10- and 30- hour construction safety and health course and to issue cards to participants verifying course completion.
