Provides planning, training, resources, response, warning, coordination and information through communications to the public, elected officials and public safety agencies to assist them in preparing for, responding to and mitigating emergencies and disasters which affect the residents of Broome County.

Responsible for developing plans for the public health response to man-made and natural health emergencies. In the event of a public health emergency, risk communication messages will be developed by the Health Department and disseminated to the general public through various media channels and community organizations. These messages will include the potential risks from exposure, signs and symptoms people should be aware of, and steps the public can take to reduce their risks from the health emergency.
Investigates diseases and outbreaks that are reported to the New York State Department of Health. If the communicable disease nurse calls, the information obtained is kept confidential and is used to protect people from getting a contagious disease.
