Responds to complaints by inspections of food service operations, hotels/motels, children's camps, mobile home parks, migrant labor camps, land developments, swimming pools, beaches, etc. Provides surveillance of community water systems and investigates spills which could contaminate water supplies. Also responds to reports of disease and lead contamination. Investigates complaints regarding indoor air and responds to public health related housing complaints, including reports of standing water, dead animals, etc.

Environmental Health is responsible for routine inspections of all food service establishments in Schenectady County. This includes restaurants, bars, taverns, caterers, and fast food establishments. Inspections are completed on a risk-based schedule. One to two inspections are completed per establishment each year. Priority is given to higher risk establishments.The unit is also responsible for investigation of all food service illness and/or general food service complaints.

Investigates special issues including rabies, radon, nuisance complaints, smoking in public, emergencies related to Public Health, West Nile Virus/Eastern Equine Encephalitis, mosquito vector surveillance, and control measures as warranted. Provides a wide variety of services essential to the health and well-being of all Genesee County Residents.
