Offers high school students a non-credit, state-certified Driver and Traffic Safety Education program. Those who successfully complete the course will receive the MV-285 Student Certificate Completion issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. The MV-285 allows students with a NYS Junior Permit to schedule a road test, receive their senior license at the age of 17 instead of 18, and may be eligible for a rate reduction in their automobile insurance. This program consists of 25.5 hours of classroom instruction and 25.5 hours of behind the wheel training and observation. Effective July 1, this course will be offered in-person, on the Ammerman Campus in Selden. Please note that XDT100 and XDT200 are corequisites and must be taken together and successfully completed to obtain the MV-285. We want to teach students to understand and recognize warning signs and threats, how to act immediately, take it seriously, understand strategies to take action, and overcome potential barriers to being an “upstander” rather than a “bystander." Provides one of the most vital units throughout the Sheriff’s office. Throughout the year, Community Relations Unit visits each Suffolk County School District as well as multiple clubs and various organizations. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and the members of the Community. CRU is responsible for implementing community outreach and school-based programs, organizing events, and promoting the Sheriff’s mission. The unit offers an array of Community and School-based programs free of charge for all Suffolk County schools, businesses, organizations, non-profits and agencies. Conducts a variety of workshops for people of all ages. School-based workshops include staff development workshops, in-classroom workshop, bias awareness, bullying, problem solving, and a three-day peer mediation training workshop for students. Community-based workshops are conducted for community, organizations, hospitals, and religious organizations that work with children and young adults. Conflict Resolution for Facilitators Workshop provides participants with conflict resolution training skills. Nurturing Inclusive Community Environment (NICE) is an emotional support program designed to end school violence and encourage academic success in a safe, peaceful learning environment. The CRC Elder Concerns gives support in the decision making process regarding health concerns and the transition to assisted living or nursing homes. Other services are also available, such as in-service course credits, mediation services, response to bullying workshops, a leadership and social justice day camp, LGBTQ workshops, and a re-entry support program for formerly incarcerated parents and their children.
