Conducts investigations of lead poisoning in children. Because lead poisoning is serious, New York State requires Health Care Providers to test all children for blood lead levels at ages 1 and 2, and up to age 6 based on risk assessment. Contact the Suffolk County Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program to find out about home safety tools and recalls on items and toys, especially if your home was built before 1978. Offers community outreach and education about lead poisoning and prevention to health providers and various homes and organizations. Call for all services offered.

Offers seminars to educate the community on various issues, such as fire or crime prevention, recycling, housing safety, health care information and more. Also inform residents about current issues or problems through fliers, church bulletins, newspaper and local events.

Offers Community Outreach/Injury Prevention Programs. Sample programs include: Concussion/TBI management for student athlete/parent/coach/school faculty sports safety information sessions; Preventing Falls in Older Adults; Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention; Stepping On, Trauma Talk and Stop the Bleed. Offers a fall-prevention program for seniors who have fallen, or have a fear of falling. This seven-week program includes six weekly classes and an in-home visit.

Provides education and training presentations on what is a poison, and materials around the house and various environments which contain harmful toxins, including medications, and how to avoid them, and what to do in case of exposure or ingestion. Presentations are age appropriate, from preschool-age to senior citizens.

Public Health Sanitarians inspect for health hazards and advise on preventive measures to maintain a healthy environment. Environmental health services include inspection of residential sites, schools, restaurants and other businesses involved with food, children's camps, swimming pools, beaches, septic systems, hotels/motels, rooming houses, campsites, mobile home parks, day care centers, and tattoo parlors. Health and safety program that is dedicated to improving health outcomes and better quality of life for Niagara County Residents. The program has six focus areas;1. Fire Prevention, 2. Air Quality, 3. Preventing Lead Poisoning, 4. Fall & Accident prevention, 5. Smoking Education & Cessation, and 6. Asthma prevention from environmental triggers. The HNP team is staffed by a Health Educator-Manager, and Health Technicians. Technicians assess homes during a visit, provides recommendations and free products to improve health and wellbeing. Products may include smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, asthma relief products, and cleaning supplies. The HNP is not an enforcement agency. All identifying information gathered during visits will remain confidential.

Home safety visitation program that includes an assessment for hazards related to lack of working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers, blocked fire exits, paint in poor condition and other lead hazards, poor condition of roof, floors, walls, handrails, and steps, mold and water leaks, pests, and asthma triggers. After assessment, homes may be provided with information on fire safety, carbon monoxide poisoning, radon gas, pest control, smoking cessation, asthma triggers, and lead poisoning prevention. Eligible homes may receive supplies such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, radon test kits, fire extinguishers, cleaning supplies, and asthma management tools.

Provides environmental information, products, and a home safety survey by Health Inspectors/Educators. Home visits include an assessment for indoor air quality, asthma control, carbon monoxide poisoning, fire and burn safety, lead poisoning hazards, unintentional injury, smoking cessation, and housing and property maintenance. Following the home assessment, intervention products and services are provided according to need and interest. Free products include: smoke detectors and batteries, CO detectors, child safety products, cleaning supplies, asthma trigger management supplies, and radon test kits to qualifying families.
