Provides a wide range of adaptive equipment for short term free loans to individuals in Saint Lawrence and Franklin counties. Staff also assist with obtaining equipment permanently through various funding streams, either through MILC, through insurance, or in the community.

Blind Mobility Aids

Administers programs and services to enhance employability, maximize independence, and assist in the development of the capacities and strengths of people who are legally blind. Programs include:

Equipment Loan Fund, which allows individuals to borrow up to $4,000 to purchase adaptive equipment.

Children's services for children who are legally blind, including early intervention rehabilitation, working with and empowering parents, arranging services to supplement educational activities, and ensuring a smooth transition to adult services.

Vocational rehabilitation programs for adults and youth ages 14 to 21 years, which provide a number of services, including assessment, information and referral, casework services, job coaching, orientation and mobility training, independent living skills training, and assistive technology assistance.

Independent living services for individuals who are not eligible for vocational rehabilitation services and who are not receiving services through another NYSCB Program. These services are provided based on individual need and may include orientation and mobility services, rehabilitation teaching, low vision services and devices, social casework, and adaptive equipment.

We have items on display for people to try, we offer demonstrations of equipment, and can tell people how to get what they need. STIC also offers short-term loan of equipment and assistive technology including: wheelchairs, TTYs, walkers, tub seats, commodes, portable ramps, and much more. Some items may be given away if we have an excess.

The objective of the lending closet is to allow children with disabilities to use the equipment to determine if it would be beneficial for them in the long term. Space is also available for therapists to meet with clients and their families, with access to the Sensory Room and equipment as needed.

Loan closet includes wide range of items, devices and equipment, such as: large-handle eating utensils, handheld video magnifier, electronic magnifying glass, computer mouse controlled by head movement.

Assistive Technology Equipment Loan
Provides special technology for area students with physical and learning disabilities. Includes various software, courseware, and hardware to meet the multiple learning needs of people with physical, sensory, or learning limitation and disabilities.
Lends assistive devices and/or durable medical equipment (including hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, shower benches/chairs, walkers, standing frames, crutches, canes, etc.) based upon individual need for 30 days or more. The center also provides assistance with obtaining needed devices and equipment from other sources, as well as training to use the devices and equipment. In addition, the center provides assessment for adaptive computer hardware and software, and training to use specialized computer programs as needed. SAIL provides assistive devices, durable medical equipment (including adaptive car seats, strollers, gait trainers, standing frames, positioning devices, etc.) and developmental toys and games for children with disabilities on a loan basis. The center also provides training concerning the use of adaptive switches, communication devices, and environmental controls for children.

Provides free loans of assistive technology. Assistive technology is any device that can be used to improve the functional abilities of people with disabilities or short-term injuries. Available items include wheelchairs, walkers, Rollators, canes, crutches, ramps, grab bars, Hoyer lifts, adaptive seating, shower chairs, commodes, wander alarms, weighted items, adaptive utensils, laptops, iPads and deaf and blind/low vision technology. We also have learning aids, toys and games for early intervention, as well as pediatric equipment. Free delivery may be available.
