NEW YORK STATE COMMISSION FOR THE BLIND (NYSCB) | NEW YORK STATE OFFICE OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES

Administers programs and services to enhance employability, maximize independence, and assist in the development of the capacities and strengths of people who are legally blind. Programs include:

Equipment Loan Fund, which allows individuals to borrow up to $4,000 to purchase adaptive equipment.

Children's services for children who are legally blind, including early intervention rehabilitation, working with and empowering parents, arranging services to supplement educational activities, and ensuring a smooth transition to adult services.

Vocational rehabilitation programs for adults and youth ages 14 to 21 years, which provide a number of services, including assessment, information and referral, casework services, job coaching, orientation and mobility training, independent living skills training, and assistive technology assistance.

Independent living services for individuals who are not eligible for vocational rehabilitation services and who are not receiving services through another NYSCB Program. These services are provided based on individual need and may include orientation and mobility services, rehabilitation teaching, low vision services and devices, social casework, and adaptive equipment.

CENTER FOR REHABILITATION TECHNOLOGY (CRT) | HELEN HAYES HOSPITAL

Provides technology for people with physical disabilities which includes augmentative/alternative communication to assist those who are unable to communicate via speech; computer access; environmental controls to learn new approaches to everyday tasks such as turning on household appliances; and seating and wheeled mobility which provides wheelchairs and customized seating/positioning systems. Also offers clinical evaluations, information services, inpatient and outpatient services and technology evaluations in the hospital's smart apartment, which is a model home equipped with an array of assistive technology devices,

Provides specialized information and referral to persons with physical disabilities who are seeking assistive technology devices to maintain or improve their functional capabilities. Assists in determining eligibility through Medicare, provides referrals for assessments, and will discuss specific devices. Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities to choose, acquire and use assistive technology appropriate for their needs. Collaborative Project of the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County and United Cerebral Palsy Association of Suffolk County.

ADVOCACY PROGRAM | ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Advises governor, legislature, and state agencies on issues facing persons with disabilities. Initiates and shapes innovative programs and identifies areas for improvement. Fosters coordination through systems advocacy and facilitates community development activities. Provides technical assistance on barrier-free design, legal rights,assistive technology to local governments, providers, families, and maintains toll-free information and referral service.

LONG ISLAND TALKING BOOK LIBRARY | LONG ISLAND TALKING BOOK LIBRARY

A Subregional Library of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Lends books and magazines that have been professionally recorded onto cassettes to eligible individuals/organizations, along with special playback equipment, catalogs, and related library services. Maintains a Reading Equipment, Aids and Devices (READ) Center which displays adaptive reading equipment, by appointment only. Serves residents of Long Island of all ages who have a visual or physical disability. Offered by public libraries, in person at agency, or postage-free mail.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY LENDING PROGRAM - ULSTER | HUDSON VALLEY REGIONAL TRAID RTC - ULSTER

One of 12 TRAID Regional Technology Centers throughout NYS. Operates as a device demonstration and training facility, allowing individuals the opportunity to “test drive” assistive technology prior to purchase or to borrow pieces while theirs are out for repair. Loans up to three pieces of adaptive technology for two months at a time.
