EYECARE AMERICA PROGRAM | AMERICAN ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

The Seniors Program connects those 65+ with local volunteer ophthalmologists who provide a medical eye exam often at no out-of-pocket cost, and up to one year of followup care for any condition diagnosed during the initial exam, for the physician services.Medicare/other insurance are billed and accepted as payment in full, resulting in no out-of-pocket expense to the patient. Uninsured individuals are not charged.Does not cover eyeglasses or medicine.EyeCare America is a public service program of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Its goal is to provide uninsured and underinsured individuals 18 years and older with access to medical eye exams. It does this by matching patients with a volunteer ophthalmologist in their area. Ophthalmologists are the only eye doctors with a medical degree.EyeCare America does NOT cover:Additional services necessary for your care, such as surgical facilities, anesthesiologists, injections, and medications, are not provided by the EyeCare America program. They are your responsibility and beyond the scope of the EyeCare America program. The ophthalmologist is a volunteer who agrees to provide only services within the program guidelines.Eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions, or the cost of eyeglasses or contact lenses are not covered by the EyeCare America program. If you are concerned about the cost of these items, discuss this with the doctor before the examination and visit our eyeglasses resources page. (EyeCare America provides medical eye exams only.)
