Allows parents to leave unwanted newborns at Safe Havens such as hospitals, police stations, or fire stations. Parents face no legal prosecution provided the baby is no more than 30 days old, and the parents make sure the baby is in no danger and the authorities are notified. Allows for parents, who are unable or unwilling to care for their infant, to give up custody within 30 days of birth with complete confidentiality, no questions asked, as long as no harm or neglect is involved. In Suffolk County, most hospitals, police departments and fire stations are designated Safe Havens.

SAFE HAVEN | ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA HOSPITAL
Offers the Safe Haven Program. Visit the emergency departments, 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. It is legal for a mother to leave her baby at a Safe Haven within the first five days of life and ensured the mother would not be prosecuted for abandonment and established that police would not investigate. The child promptly receives medical attention and Child Protective Services will ensure the child finds a home. When a mother arrives at a Catholic Health hospital with the child, she is not required to provide information. For the baby’s benefit, she may offer information about her family medical history. This information can be provided then or the mother may opt to complete a questionnaire and return it by mail. All information will be kept confidential and the mother’s identity will be protected. The baby, and the mother (if requested), will receive medical treatment.

Safe Haven is a designated public place, such as a hospital, firehouse, EMS station or police precinct where a baby can be left, in a safe condition, so that it may be permanently cared for. The goal of Safe Haven is to accept an infant from a birth mother, get the infant medical care if needed, then put the infant in the adoption process.
