* Instructs blind or visually impaired persons to travel safely and independently by learning or relearning the use of all sensory input (touch, sound, remaining vision) and through the use of travel aids, white cane, and sighted guide training. Offers information about transportation options within the county and surrounding areas, including public bus service. Additional Services - Flag Stops: Undesignated bus stops that can occur on a fixed bus route between designated bus stops. Must contact the Access Allegany Call Center to schedule a Flag Stop. Must be ready to provide desired pick-up location and time. Route Deviation: In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Access Allegany offers individuals living with a disability better access to transportation through route deviation. To request this service, the Access Allegany Call Center must be contacted at least two business days in advance.

Dedicated to creating, publishing and distributing tactile illustrations for readers who are blind or visually impaired. Creative Adaptations for Learning (CAL) produces books, flash cards, and other educational materials which use raised lines and textured shapes to help visually impaired people recognize shapes and objects the product is particularly useful for developing reading readiness (braille or print), orientation and mobility and communication skills. Young children, their parents, siblings, teachers and Occupational Therapists, any of whom may be blind or visually impaired, use these materials...as well as children who have dyslexia, autism, cerebral palsy or learning delays. Serves a national geographic area.

GUIDE DOG SERVICES | GUIDE DOG FOUNDATION FOR THE BLIND

Trains and provides guide dogs to people who are blind or visually impaired. Each person must complete a 25 day in-residence training program at the Foundation. Each graduate receives a dog, its equipment, a comprehensive training program and after-care services without charge.

Independent living services for individuals who are not eligible for vocational rehabilitation services and who are not receiving services through another NYSCB Program. These services are provided based on individual need and may include orientation and mobility services, rehabilitation teaching, low vision services and devices, social casework, and adaptive equipment.

INDEPENDENT LIVING/ADAPTIVE LIVING PROGRAM | NEW YORK STATE COMMISSION FOR THE BLIND - ALBANY DISTRICT OFFICE

The Adaptive Living Program (ALP), is for people who need training and services to assist them in living at home and in the community. In most cases, the consumer has to be over the age of 55, unless they have circumstances where they do not want to pursue employment. The ALP program provides Adjustment Counseling, Rehab Teaching, and Orientation & Mobility. NYSCB contracts with a number of private agencies for the blind who go to consumer's homes to provide services. The primary benefit of this program is to allow senior citizens who are experiencing vision loss to function more independently in daily activities.
