GUIDE DOG TRAINING PROGRAMS | GUIDING EYES FOR THE BLIND

Provides various training programs to fit the needs of qualified individuals to handle a guide dog. Training program includes proper use, care and handling of the guide dog in rural, suburban and urban settings. Residential Program - A 21 day residential program held 12 times a year with a small class size, about 12 per class. Special Needs Program- For students who, in addition to being legally blind, have a condition that affects their mobility, such as hearing impairments, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, etc. Action Program - An accelerated 10-day residential and 5-day in-home program for experienced guide dog users.Home Training Program - An in-home program for applicants who cannot attend the residential program

GUIDE DOG SERVICES | GUIDE DOG FOUNDATION FOR THE BLIND

Trains and provides guide dogs to people who are blind or visually impaired. Each person must complete a 25 day in-residence training program at the Foundation. Each graduate receives a dog, its equipment, a comprehensive training program and after-care services without charge.

NORTHEAST REGIONAL CENTER | NORTHEAST REGIONAL CENTER

Provides service dogs to be matched with adults, children ages 18+ or veterans with a disabilities other than blindness; and facility dogs for professional therapists/health care workers to use in animal-assisted therapy programs within hospitals, nursing homes, rehab centers or other such institutions.

Provides service assistance dogs to help military veterans who have suffered physical disabilities or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to active combat duty.

PUPPY WALKER PROGRAM | GUIDE DOG FOUNDATION FOR THE BLIND

Recruits and trains volunteer puppy walkers , who raise and socialize guide dog puppies. Volunteers raise puppies for one year, teaching puppies house manners, basic obedience, leash walking and exposing puppies to a variety of experiences and situations. Training manuals and free weekly obedience classes available.

Provides a hearing or service dog to qualified applicants within a reasonable amount of time (one year or less). These specialty trained dogs assist adults and children who are deaf or have physical disabilities, who can benefit from the therapeutic value of a dog to help them live a more independent life.

PETS FOR VETS | TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD ANIMAL SHELTER

As veterans may benefit from having an animal companion, the Town of Hempstead will waive adoption fees for all veterans who wish to adopt a pet from its Animal Shelter. Furthermore, all cats and dogs will be spayed or neutered and microchipped free of charge.

CANINE COMPANIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE (CCI) - NORTHEAST REGION | CANINE COMPANIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE

People with physical or developmental disabilities who can demonstrate that a Canine Companion will enhance their independence or their quality of life are qualified to apply. Also eligible are professionals working for organizations that provide physical or mental health care to clients who will benefit from interaction with a facility dog. The dog is free of charge. Students must pay for their transportation to and from the center, their meals during Team Training, and depending on the training center in your regional area, the cost of staying in a hotel.
