Coordinated through the Boy Scouts of America. The goal of the Police Explorers program is to provide an immersive career experience within a controlled environment focused on law enforcement. We aim to aid our Explorers in gaining confidence while garnering career readiness as they learn about the purpose, mission, and objectives of law enforcement agencies. Our program consists of training, community service, practical experiences, character development, physical fitness, life skills, leadership opportunities and exposure to multiple law enforcement careers. They conduct community service, provide crime reduction and prevention materials to the public, as well as learn about civic responsibilities and the law enforcement profession from Police Officers who act as advisors and mentors. Exploring is not a boot camp. We are looking for young individuals with a genuine desire to make a difference in the community in a positive way with an interest in pursuing a law enforcement career or a related field in the criminal justice system. Provides young adults who may be interested in a career in law enforcement with a comprehensive program of training, competition, leadership skills, service and practical experiences. The program is based on Five Areas of Emphasis: Career Opportunities; Life Skills; Citizenship; Character Education and Leadership Experience. An important goal of law enforcement exploring is to help young adults be responsible and caring people, both now and in the future using “character education activities” which helps young adults develop the ability to make responsible choices. It aids teens in becoming more independent, developing social relationships, re-evaluating values while also undergoing positive physical and psychological changes. Hands-on learning opportunities through exploration visits, guided apprenticeships, career and community exploration activities and community service projects for Tompkins County youth ages 12-20.Apprenticeship participants are placed at a worksite and guided by volunteer adult mentor who introduces a young person to that field.At-risk and economically disadvantaged youth may be eligible for paid apprenticeships with additional support to assure a successful experience.
