Volunteers are vital to the Regional Food Bank. Every day, volunteers assist in our warehouse, on our farm, in our office, and in the community to ensure our operation continues to be most efficient.

Recruits volunteers who want to provide compassionate and supportive care to terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteer opportunities include, patient care support, 11th Hour (sitting with a dying patient and providing emotional support to the family), pet therapy (dog owners can accompany their pet to visit patients), and clerical duties.

Recruites volunteers for a variety of activities for various programs. Opportunities include classroom aides, teach yoga or special skill or clerical tasks.

Offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for those who want to help the MS office and events.

Administers the Urgent Rx Program. Uninsured patients are identified for vouchers for generic medicine from a formulary. Vouchers provided at the Ithaca Free ClinicVouchers are for acute conditions and medications for no more than fourteen (14) days.If an individual DOES NOT receive an Urgent Rx voucher with his/her prescriptions at the time of discharge, he or she must contact the location which issued the prescriptions to verify that the medications are covered by Urgent Rx.Prescriptions can be filled ONLY in Tompkins County at specific pharmacies listed on the voucher.Medications for chronic conditions, e.g., diabetes, asthma, cancer, heart conditions, are not covered.NOTE TO CALL SPECIALISTS: If a caller needs help in obtaining medication for chronic conditions, refer him/her to the Community Health Advocates Program of the Human Services Coalition or to Needymeds.org or Rx Outreach.

Helps women and young girls experiencing an unexpected pregnancy. Offers alternative to abortion and referrals for medical care, diapers, formula, maternity clothes and baby clothing. Offers pregnancy self-test. All services are free and confidential.

Due to COVID-19, VOA has limited volunteer opportunities. Post-COVID, VOA will welcome volunteers to assist with life skills classes, gardening/landscaping, simple maintenance tasks (such as painting) and special events.

Provides free day care for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers of single-parent students who meet certain criteria. (low income, single parents attending high school, college, business school, voc-tech or GED classes) Offers childcare during work hours in addition to their school hours. Volunteers needed to assist in office work, primarily filing, typing and telephone work. Flexible hours, weekdays 9am-noon or 1pm-5pm. College-age, Adults, High School, AHORA SI volunteers tutor limited English-speaking children 5-12 years old in the areas of mathematics, writing, reading, social studies, science, etc. Mon, Tues, and Wed., 3pm-5pm. Volunteers needed to teach computer literacy from 10am-11am and 3pm-5pm.

Offers clinical, operational or administrative volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of 50 hours over a period of three months, whether as a learning opportunity for students or merely as a way of giving back to one's community. Clinical assignments in our residential and community-based programs may include participation in our recreational program, agency-sponsored events and leisure and relaxation therapy. Volunteers also provide one-to-one attention to our program participants, such as reading a book, taking a person for a walk, or simply serving as a "big brother or big sister." A volunteer is selected on the basis of individual interest, skill, and experience.

Volunteers help clean the shelter, do laundry, care for the cats and socialize the cats. Additionally, there is gardening work and painting, on an as needed basis. Volunteers are welcome on a regular schedule or whenever available even if only for a few hours. Help is needed to clean and feed the cats from 9:15 a.m. to noon, prior to the opening to the public. Socialization of the cats happens beginning at noon.

Volunteer opportunities include the weekend welcome and merchandise booth, assistance with events and in the office. Ambassador opportunities include tour guides for formal tours, and for informal (walk-up) tours and off-site speaking engagements, including help for the Farmer's Market which runs from June through October.
