STOP DWI PROGRAM | ORANGE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY SERVICES

Educational program that attempts to discourage adolescents and adults from driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs that have an impact on their reflexes or judgement. The objective of the program is to reduce the incidence of accidents caused by drinking/drug impaired drivers.

VICTIM IMPACT PANEL PROGRAM | PREVENTION COUNCIL OF PUTNAM

The Putnam County Victim Impact Panel is a collaboration between NCADD Putnam, Putnam County Probation, STOP DWI, and the Walter Hoving Home. The purpose of the program is to impact DWI/DWAI offenders and others deemed appropriate by the judicial system, and to provide restorative benefits to victims speaking as panel members. The speakers talk briefly about an impaired driving crash in which they were injured, or in which a loved one was killed or injured, and how it has impacted their lives and the lives of their families. Other panel members include people in recovery, emergency services providers, police officers, or even a DWI/DWAI offender.

Stop DWI Program | Yates County Sheriff's Office

Legislated in NYS as a response to injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers. Provides a general deterrence approach with four major components. Enforcement - includes 13 local police departments, sheriffs and state police. Adjudication - includes public defenders, prosecution and magistrates. Rehabilitation - includes an alcohol abuse counselor and a probation officer. Education - includes many programs geared to raising public awareness with a particular focus on students in local schools. The program is entirely funded through drunk driving fines received through town, village, city and county courts. No Yates County tax dollars are involved.

STOP DWI PROGRAM | ONEIDA COUNTY STOP DWI

* Operates a program aiming to prevent impaired driving in a model that includes: arresting those who drive while under the influence of alcohol; swift adjudication of individual cases; certain and severe punishment for those convicted; and publicity for the arrest and prosecution efforts. Includes the following activities:
  • DWI Victim Impact Panels - Victims/survivors speak to DWI offenders every six to eight weeks.
  • Law Enforcement - Selective enforcement units patrol at peak hours in high-risk areas.
  • Prosecution - Special prosecution unit in the Oneida County District Attorney's Office handles all DWI cases.
  • Probation - Officers within the Oneida County Probation Department are responsible for coordinating all DWI cases.
  • Evaluation and Treatment - Evaluates and treats offenders convicted of DWI and related offenses.
  • Community Awareness and Education - Community awareness and education presentations for all interested groups, including elementary, high school, and college age level groups and all other community organizations.
  • Additional administrative programs to prevent intoxicated driving.

TEEN DRIVING: A FAMILY AFFAIR | COUNCIL ON ADDICTION PREVENTION AND EDUCATION OF DUTCHESS COUNTY

A program that brings the Victim Impact Panel model into local high schools as part of the studentâs application for a parking permit to allow students to drive to school. The program mandates that both the student and a parent attend this modified VIP which includes victims of substance related crashes as well as representatives from the District Attorneyâs Office, the insurance industry and the medical community. Parents and students gain an understanding of the serious legal, medical, insurance and emotional costs resulting from drinking, drugging and driving. Families are asked to create a driving contract.

IMPAIRED DRIVER PROGRAM | NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONTINUING EDUCATION & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Offers an Impaired Driver Program for eligible motorists convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), or Driving While Alcohol Impaired (DWAI). The Department of Motor Vehicles determines eligibility for the program. For drivers convicted in New York State or with a New York state driver’s license, you must register for the program at the Department of Motor Vehicles. NYS Liquor Authority approved specifically for alcohol servers: establishment owners, bartenders, wait staff, bouncers, festival attendants, convenience store attendants and any other person responsible for serving/selling alcoholic beverages. Program designed to educate servers on best practices of policies and legal responsibilities related to serving alcohol in a retail environment. CPR Online version fee of $35.00 required per participant.

REDUCE OUR ADOLESCENT DRINKING/DRUGGING AND DRIVING (ROADD) | STUDENT ASSISTANCE SERVICES (SAS)

The goal of the program is to reduce the number of teenage alcohol/drug-related driving accidents, violations and deaths. The 6-8 week classroom sessions are designed to supplement the health and driver education curriculum offered by each school. Class topics include: DWI laws and the results of an arrest, other drugs and their impact on driving, and special concerns for inexperienced drivers.
