Community Services | Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum

CONNETQUOT RIVER STATE PARK PRESERVE | CONNETQUOT RIVER STATE PARK PRESERVE

Seeks to protect and preserve natural habitat which is home to a variety of plant and wildlife including waterfowl, osprey and white-tailed deer. Preserve also offers 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding (by annual permit), cross country skiing and nature trails, as well as fly fishing (with permit). The 32 mile Long Island Greenbelt Trail passes through the preserve. A museum and gift shop are also part of the preserve. Call for further information, special events, and/or environmental programs.

Offers an historic and beautiful 84-acre sanctuary of oak forests, ponds, streams, small mammals and scores of bird species, all of which can viewed via five miles of clearly marked trails. In addition, the preserve incorporates a 3,000-square-foot museum with displays about the ecology of Long Island, as well as animal exhibits and shows and interactive activities for children. The National September 11 Memorial Museum tells the story of 9/11 through multimedia displays, archives, narratives and a collection of monumental and authentic artifacts. The lives of every victim of the 2001 and 1993 attacks are commemorated.The 911 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to those killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, PA and the Pentagon, as well as those killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February, 1993. Many of our venues are open to the public and showcase the talents of our students and professors to the greater community. The Steinberg Museum of Art is hailed by The New York Times for its impressive collections, Steinberg Museum of Art at Hillwood serves as an integral part of the cultural resources at LIU Post. Each year the museum features exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations and symposia to enrich, inform and educate our students, the Campus and local communities. The Hutchins Gallery, located in the lower level of the Library, is a magnificent exhibit hall that showcases the sculpture and painting of local artists, faculty and students. The Student Art League Gallery Located in Hillwood Commons, displays the artwork of undergraduate and graduate art students. Exhibits range from one-person shows to small group exhibits, and include displays of ceramics, paintings, mixed media, multi-media and photography. Call for more detailed information.
