The Building Department also issues plumbing, electrical, gas and oil heating system permits as mandated by the State of New York.

Investigates complaints or reports of alleged violation of town ordinances such as illegal apartments or group rentals. Operates independent investigations, and may bring cases to Justice Court when violations are found.

Proposes and recommends modifications to the Town's Comprehensive Plan to provide for the improvement of the Town, future growth, protection of natural resources, and to provide adequate facilities for housing, transportation, distribution, comfort, convenience, public health, safety and general welfare of the residents provides advisory reports on proposed zoning changes reviews specific matters which have been referred by the Town Board and issues Fresh Water Wetlands permits persuant to subdivision review. The Building Inspector is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Town's Zoning Ordinance as well as the Building Codes of NYS. The Building Inspector is also the Fire Inspector and performs fire safety and property maintenance inspections.

The building department monitors new building conditions and construction, and oversees the maintenance of older multi-family structures. Also enforces the state and local building codes, housing standards and ordinances, to the review of applications for permits of new buildings, repairs, alterations, signs, and rooming houses, in addition to electrical and plumbing work. The building department accepts complaints from tenants about conditions the landlord fails to resolve.

Town Clerk serves as the Registration of Vital Statistics, Records Management Officer, Marriage Officer and NYS & Town Licensing and Permitting Agent. Issues Marriage Affidavits/licenses, dog licenses, taxi and peddler licenses, parking, handicap and shellfish permits and hunting and fishing licenses. Files all Birth and Death Certificates for the unicorporated communites within Southampton Town. Fills Freedom of Information requests for Town Records.

The building and planning department monitors new building conditions and construction. Also enforces the state and local building codes, housing standards and ordinances, to the review of applications for permits of new buildings, repairs, alterations, signs, and rooming houses, in addition to electrical and plumbing work.

Issues building permits inspects construction sites for adherence to Town laws and regulations investigates complaints of unlawful usage of land and/or property.
