When an emergency/disaster happens, CERT members can provide immediate assistance to their community and give critical support to first responders using a coordinated, collaborative and organized effort. Offers a volunteer program whose primary mission is to enhance community safety by mitigating risks, preparing for emergencies, responding effectively to crises, and aiding in recovery efforts. The Auxiliary Police Section is comprised of over 30 community based units. Each unit is made up of dedicated volunteers who: Prevent & deter criminal activity by routine patrols in marked Auxiliary Police vehicles; Ensure the safety of our fellow residents during various community events; Manage traffic at parades and special events such as the LI Marathon, fireworks displays, holiday ceremonies as well as other community events & festivities and Provide assistance and support services during disasters and other emergencies. Our auxiliary police officers must attend and complete a 150 hour / 38 session basic training course which is taught by state certified instructors at the Nassau County Police Academy. Provides information and guidance for local residents in an event of an emergency or disaster, along with rescue, recovery and mitigation services.

Provides training and support to the county's first responder community as a division of the Erie County Department of Health. Coordinates CFR-Certified First Responder and EMT/AEMT-Advanced/Emergency Medical Technician training for volunteer and paid emergency medical care providers. Provides paramedic training. Operates the MERS Control emergency services dispatch center and coordinates ambulance responses for the City of Buffalo, New York State Thruway throughout Erie County, and the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Responsible for supporting operations of the county's Hazardous Materials/WMD Response Team (ECHMRT), Erie County Medical Reserve Corps and Western New York Stress Reduction Program. Operates the County-run Ambulance Service. Provides outreach through the Reach out to 911 program. EMS Staff responds to emergencies and disasters around the county including MCI-Mass Casualty Incidents, School Bus accidents and those events requiring specialized emergency medical services and/or coordination of EMS resources.

READY Genesee is designed to help citizens learn how to protect themselves and their families against all types of hazards. The focus of the content is on how to develop, practice, and maintain emergency plans that reflect what must be done before, during, and after a disaster to protect people and their property. Also included is information on how to assemble a disaster supplies kit that contains food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity for individuals and their families to survive following a disaster in the event they must rely on their own resources.
