Provides three types of alcoholism meetings: open, which are open to anyone closed, for members and newcomers affected by another person's drinking and ala-teen, restricted to individuals up to 18 years of age. Special focus meetings are available for women, men, gays, and parents. Anonymity is protected for all members. Nassau County information service can provide pamphlets, meeting lists and al-anon information for clergy and social workers, health and education professionals. Arrangements can be made for speakers to present at schools, health fairs and other institutions. Monthly open meetings are specifically available for clergy, doctors, social workers and general public.

Program staff from the department are available upon request to travel throughout Nassau County to conduct presentations and informational forums on the various programs offered by the department. Informational presentations are available for all services provided by the Nassau County Department of Social Services. Such services include: Adoption; Adult Services; AIDS Services; Child Protective Services; Child Support Enforcement; Day Care; Domestic Violence; Emergency Services; Employment for Temporary Assistance Clients; Food Stamps; Home Energy Assistance Program; Housing and Homeless Prevention; Medicaid; Medicaid Managed Care; Services to Children and Families; Temporary Assistance and Temporary Assistance Fraud. Restores grave sites of the Veterans of the 14th Regiment N.Y.S.M. All presentations are given in full civil war uniform.

Offers divorcing or separating couples an effective and humane alternative to the traditional adversarial process. With the help of a trained mediator, couples in mediation work out their settlement based solely on the needs of the couple and of the children. Process seeks to explore options for both the husband and wife. Areas of mediation include parenting responsibilities (access, custody, support), distribution of marital assets, spousal maintenance (alimony), and any other relevant issues. Mediation process includes an initial consultation followed a limited number of bi-weekly 1 hour - 1 1/2 hour sessions. The mediator prepares a plain-language Memorandum of Understanding which sets forth all the terms needed for divorce with the exception of legal language and signatures. The couple may then submit the memorandum to their attorneys, or neutral attorney. Call. Appointment required.
