Independent Living is a member of the Statewide Systems Advocacy Network, a group of eighteen independent living centers throughout New York State which collaborates with other disability organizations to ensure that legislation affecting people with disabilities is introduced, passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.

ATI provides two major services relating to making agencies, businesses and public facilities accessible to people with disabilities. Accessibility modifications include:rampsliftsroll-in showerselevatorsbathroom and kitchen modificationsparkingsignagedoors and entrywaysATI staff can also assists agencies, businesses, governmental agencies with information on barrier removal, universal design and compliance with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) regulations.

Provide ADA and/or Accessibility consultations to businesses and consumers in the community. Maintain the latest information on the ADA and related laws, regulations, policies or procedures, and advocate as appropriate. We also offer training on the ADA and related laws. There is a charge for agencies/businesses, but services are free for consumers/families.

Advocates for ADA compliance in all buildings, and assists building owners, businesses, employers and municipalities to comply with ADA guidelines.

Provides the necessary means for people with disabilities to participate and enjoy any activity or service offered by Orange County. Such as providing appropriate aids and services for effective communication, and modifications to policies and procedures to ensure that people with disabilities have an opportunity to enjoy all programs, services and activities.

SAIL provides direct training and instruction to individuals with disabilities, family members, and other interested parties to develop independent living skills in the areas of assistive technology, financial management, household management, and social skills. Education, instruction, and training is also provided as requested to develop any other skills necessary for living in the community and participating in community activities. Also provides assistance for organizations that are in the process of implementing the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and have questions regarding its requirements.

We cover 22 counties surrounding Cortland and are the largest provider of accessibility modification services in Upstate NY.ATI assists clients with these types of projects: vehicle modifications wheelchair ramps and lifts accessible porches/decks handrails expanded doorwa roll-in showers with grab bars bathtub grab bars and seats kitchen modifications bedroom relocation adaptations for visual and or hearing impairments accessible storage spaceOther services include: accessibility, assessment and evaluation ADA compliance consultation project planning/management, specifications, cost estimates drafting services construction management inspections and permits funding sources assistance

Provides assistance in the following three categories: 1) Referral: Provides information and referral to services. 2) Representation: Acts as a link between disabled persons, the community, and government agencies. 3) ADA Oversight: Deals with ADA compliance and issues, and works with disabled Erie County employees regarding returning to work with reasonable accommodations. Advisory council meets the third Friday of each month except in July and August, at 9:30am in room 625.
