Offers free public lectures on select Fridays during the academic school year. Usually four lectures a semester are scheduled. Lectures are based on the current research of the faculty, staff and students of Stony Brook as well as areas of interest from the public. Offers a graduate-level advanced certificate program that prepares students to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians (RD Exam), administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) (https://www.cdrnet.org/certifications/registered-dietitian-rd-certification). Through coursework and supervised clinical experiences, students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to serve communities through the promotion of optimal nutrition, health and well-being. The need for dietetics practitioners is expected to increase as the health care community places a greater emphasis on the benefits of healthy eating, disease prevention and medical nutrition therapy. Upon successful completion of the Dietetic Internship, a Certificate of Advanced Studies is awarded, and students are eligible to sit for the (RD Exam). Upon passing the (RD Exam), a student will become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). Call for more detailed information.

Also offers: after school recreation at selected high schools, weekend community programs for adults, school vacation programs, week-long nature study and musical theater programs, and summer enrichment classes.

Provides information about cancer, diagnosis, and treatment rights, including in Spanish. Helps patients to know what questions to ask and the answers to listen for. Offers low interest loans for the purchase of essential equipment necessary for disabled person to overcome barriers to daily living or vocational functioning following rehabilitation. Loans range from $500-$4000 with a repayment period of 2-8 years and the interest rate will vary. Examples of eligible equipment include, but are not limited to, wheelchairs, wheelchair van lifts, ramps, communication devices for hearing impaired/deaf, and prostheses.

Assists individuals when they want to file a discrimination complaint when their civil rights have been violated.

Provides lost and found animal listings, picks up dogs, provides ambulance service for cats in need, enforces local and town ordinances and issues summonses.

Provides transportation on Friday and Saturday nights for anyone (youth or adults) in the community who has been drinking or taking drugs and is unable to drive or anyone who has no ride due to a friend/date who is drunk or stoned or has been abusive.

Independent Living is a member of the Statewide Systems Advocacy Network, a group of eighteen independent living centers throughout New York State which collaborates with other disability organizations to ensure that legislation affecting people with disabilities is introduced, passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.
