Dedicated to providing literacy support to children, adolescents, and adults in an environment where learners have the safety and support that allow them to take risks and gain confidence as they move toward developing mature control of literacy skills. The Reading/Writing Learning Clinic provides services to families in the communities that adjoin Hofstra University as well as in the larger metropolitan area. New York state-certified literacy specialists provide weekly small group or individual instruction. The Reading/Writing Learning Clinic also offers professional reading and writing evaluations for school-aged children and adults. Consultations and trainings are designed to assist staff to work effectively at sites with the most challenging students on the autism spectrum. These services are added to a District’s Commitment Form/student IEP when the service of a behavioral specialist or autism consultant is recommended by the CSE for implementation on a regular basis over a period of time. Autism consultants will address applied behavior analysis strategies, behavioral strategies, and educational strategies. Parent Training provides a bridge between home and school programs and can assist parents in utilizing strategies in the home that are consistent with those used in school to facilitate student progress. Home ABA Services are designed to meet the needs of component districts for students with autism spectrum disorders to provide for continuity and generalization. Methodologies include applied behavior analysis, discrete trial instruction, and task analysis. Progress is tracked and monitored to emphasize effective collaboration and consistency between home, school, and community.

Offers remedial courses for students in grades 6–12 to make up deficiencies in academic work. This wide variety of remedial courses can benefit students with low or failing grades. These courses help to address regression or summer slide in order to prepare students for upcoming courses. This does not replace a full course year. Provides a dynamic, child-centered, educational experience at the Jerusalem Avenue School, for students’ ages 5 to 10 with learning, behavioral and developmental disabilities. This center is staffed by certified special educators dedicated to providing a high-quality, individualized learning environment. Class ratios, as determined by student need, are 6:1:1 or 9:1:2. Reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies are aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and address students' cognitive levels and learning styles. Learning, behavioral or developmental disabilities that interfere with students’ abilities to succeed in general education are addressed by social and emotional supports integrated into classroom activities. A school-wide growth recognition PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support) program addresses social and emotional needs and a specific plan is developed for each child by the child's teacher and counselor. Social learning skills are emphasized throughout the curriculum and students work as a team to support each other in social growth. Parents are kept informed concerning their child's progress and are encouraged to be active partners in the education of their child by reinforcing what the child learns in school at home. Supportive and related services are available as needed. Psychologists and social workers work closely with students in individual and group sessions to support the development of positive social skills and behaviors and are available to parents on a group or individual basis. Occupational and physical therapies assist students in meeting goals. Speech and Language services are designed to increase students' learning potential and address receptive and expressive difficulties. Different modes of communication are used to meet individual students' needs. The Jerusalem Avenue School also provides the Intensive Support Program (ISP) through a collaborative program developed by Nassau BOCES and the North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center for students with significant emotional difficulties with an on-site psychiatrist, psychiatric social workers and coordinator. Services include psychiatric supervision and ongoing parent counseling to address emotional and behavioral issues that interfere with the achievement of educational goals. In addition to the center-based program in North Bellmore, two 9:1:2 classes located in the Michael F. Stokes Elementary School in the Island Trees School District provide students with opportunities for integration with non-disabled peers during specific activities during the day. Provides students, ages 16-21, who have been identified as having needs not being met in current school programs in our region. The program will be located in local area high schools and/or BOCES programs and offers our “at risk” students an opportunity to address individual and family issues that are currently hampering their progress toward a New York State diploma. The program will continue to offer academic education at a commencement level, development of transition skills, and development of social skills designed to foster improved functioning in a school setting. The Regional Alternative High School Program is also offering placement to students that have been suspended or are awaiting an out of district placement, as well as offering students the option to attend for credit recovery and test preparation for state assessments. The Regional Alternative High School is also offering placement to students who are English Language Learners. Students enrolled in this program will have a daily schedule that consists of four hour departmentalized format. Instruction takes place in “blocks” focusing on two core subjects (ELA and Math), and includes a daily CTE component.

Provides strategic learning skills to selected clients in the local community and serve as a supervised training facility for our graduate student interns. The Centers are staffed by graduate student interns who are in the process of completing a Master's degree in either Literacy or Special Education. Each clinician is closely supervised by professors who are faculty members of the department. The Clients are Students in grades two through six who have marked discrepancy between their potential and their actual achievement and will be considered as applicants for various programs. Programs include: Individual Assessment: Each student is administered a series of diagnostic tests which measures educational achievement, physical factors and intellectual potential. Detailed development history interview completes the appraisal. An individual program is designed for each client based on the results of the evaluation. Literacy (Reading) Instruction is on a one-to-one basis. The major goal of this program is to develop reading, writing, spelling and study skill strategies. Serves disabled adolescents, ages eleven through fourteen. This program provides an enriched educational environment that incorporates the Common Core Learning Standard while responding to many of the studentsâ social and psychological needs. Beyond basic academic instructions, many students receive services from consulting psychiatrist either employed by the Office of Mental Health or BOCES and participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities. The classroom teacher, the paraprofessional(s), a psychologist and a social worker assigned to each classroom unit create a team approach. Outreach services to involve families within the school community is an integral part of the Middle School Program. Also offered is the The PASS program at the Brennan Middle/High School. This program is serving disabled and non-disabled students of middle and high school ages. This program offers a highly structured environment in which instructional and behavioral deficits can be addressed within a small group setting for high school aged students. The educational environment parallels that of the Brennan High School. Students may or may not be classified as special education students. All are in need of alternative education. Truancy, non-compliance with school rules and generally disruptive behavior often characterize a student in crisis; such a student is appropriate for the PASS program. Students who are at risk due to poor achievement may also be referred to this program where they will be afforded many support services to ensure success.
