* Provides public health services that include:

• Rabies Prevention (receive notification of all dog bites in the county and work with the person that was bitten to make sure they get screened for rabies risk and the need for post-exposure prophylaxis).
• Lead Poisoning Prevention (works with families of children at risk for, or with an elevated blood lead level to reduce that child's level). Testing is not provided by public health but a referral is made to the NYS office.
• Immunization Program (provides mandatory and optional vaccines for the county residents)

Regulates and inspects the operation of public pools, beaches, and recreational spray grounds that are permitted by Nassau County Department of Health. Responsible for protecting the community from adverse health effects that may result from environmental pollution, unsanitary conditions or unsafe practices. Activities include backflow prevention, inspection and regulation of public beaches and swimming pools, information on beach openings and closings, inspections and monitoring of children's summer camps, demolition permits, monitors the quality of drinking water, conducts hearings on alleged violations of Public Health Laws, inspects food service establishments and investigates foodborne disease outbreaks, provides training for food service managers, responds to complaints regarding dog waste, garbage overflowing sewage and bird feeding, responds to heating complaints, regulates the removal or abandonment of fuel oil tanks, tests for lead exposure, investigates reports of animal bites and rodent complaints, inspects sewer connections/closures, controls the spread of mosquitoes, and inspects and provides sanitary control over motels and hotels. Participates in all phases of emergency management including hurricane preparedness, hazardous materials mitigation, and any and all natural or man-made disasters that affect the town. It is part of FEMA Hurricane Preparedness Program, and in times of emergency, fully integrates with federal, state and county agencies in providing disaster relief, emergency evacuation and housing and transportation for dislocated residents.

Conducts property transfer surveys which includes bacteriological water analysis and testing of on-site waste water treatment systems. Regulates all public water supplies as defined by Part 5 of the NYS Sanitary Code. Oversees cooling tower registry and reviews water testing results. Investigates special issues including rabies, radon, nuisance complaints, smoking in public, emergencies related to Public Health, West Nile Virus/Eastern Equine Encephalitis, mosquito vector surveillance, and control measures as warranted. Provides free rabies clinics for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets in various locations throughout the year. Call or go online to find locations and register. Responsible for food service establishment permitting, education, and inspection. Oversees permitting and enforces the NYS Sanitary Code for Bathing Beaches, Children Camps, Swimming Pools, Temporary Residences, Tanning Salons, and Tattoo and Piercing Parlors. Investigates and oversees the abatement of lead-based paint hazards in dwellings where children under 6 years of age resides.

Primary services include: - Monitoring the community for the presence of communicable diseases; - Providing information on communicable diseases, including preventative measures, to members of the medical community, the public, and individuals exposed to communicable diseases; - Investigating outbreaks or unusual occurrences of disease, then instituting or recommending appropriate control measures; - Investigating foodborne illnesses that occur in Erie County; - Coordinating follow-up on animal bites and providing information on the treatment and risk of rabies; - Compiling a community health assessment that provides information on births, deaths, etc., as a resource for planning or evaluation.

Links callers with appropriate services using computerized database of information, national directories, and other resources.

Provides public health services in the areas of food protection, residential sanitation (including hotels and motels), and temporary facilities including schools, day care facilities, public swimming pools, campgrounds, and tanning facilities.

Investigates diseases and outbreaks that are reported to the New York State Department of Health. If the communicable disease nurse calls, the information obtained is kept confidential and is used to protect people from getting a contagious disease.

* Offers a number of different clinics available to adults and children such as: Tuberculosis Control Clinic, Rabies Control, and Child and Adult Immunization Clinics. * Offers a tobacco cessation program that includes: Free starter kit, Individual counseling, and printed educational materials. * Provides the Early Intervention Program. Services include: Occupational, physical, and speech therapy. * Provides Children with Special Health Care Needs help with diagnosis, evaluation and treatment programs. * Provides the Child Find Program that assists with early identification and referral to services in the community. * Provides maternal/child health services, including prenatal/maternity education, home visits, and breastfeeding support.

Responsible for septic systems, inspections and permit issuance, drinking water testing, public health hazards and nuisances, clean indoor air enforcement, onsite wastewater treatment system regulation, rabies investigations and vaccinations, insect control, West Nile Virus surveillance. Rabies vaccinations: Conducts free rabies vaccination clinics for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets in several locations across Cattaraugus County. All Cattaraugus County residents are eligible for these free vaccinations. Notices will be posted on the Cattaraugus County website, through radio, newspaper ads, fliers on community boards around the County.
