Helps residents with limited resources achieve lifelong health and fitness. EFNEP teaches healthy habits through interactive discussion and hands-on activities. Families learn about healthier food choices, physical activity, stretching food dollars, and food safety. Classes are held in both community and one-on-one home settings, as well as distance learning via Zoom and Facebook Live.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension links the research from Cornell University and applies it to maximize New York State's agricultural and natural resources. It also provides programming, services, and information regarding sustainability, nutrition, food safety, obesity prevention, and youth development/education (through the 4-H program). It is committed to contribute to NYS communities and empower their futures. This organization provides services across five sectors: Agriculture, Community, Environment, Nutrition, and Youth/Families.

The Environmental Health Unit administers a ten-hour food worker certification course covering aspects of proper food safety principles, prevention of foodborne illness, and review of restaurant inspection. This is required for all new food service establishments in Schenectady County. One person from each establishment must attend the course and receive certification.

Provides public health services in the areas of food protection, residential sanitation (including hotels and motels), and temporary facilities including schools, day care facilities, public swimming pools, campgrounds, and tanning facilities.

Provides education for youth and families on healthy food choices, food safety and physical activity via printed materials, school programs and Eat Smart NY classes.

* Offers free or low-cost educational workshops, applied research projects, and information on food-related topics, from food safety and nutrition to healthy eating on a limited budget.* Offer free or low-cost gardening classes and tours all year long, and opportunities to garden as a volunteer.* Offers information on Composting, Energy Conservation, Recycling, and Sustainable/Alternative Energy in workshops, presentations, articles, and fact sheets.* Provides residential recycling education for Seneca County.* Offers local and county-wide 4-H clubs, after-school 4-H opportunities, connections to 4-H camps, and statewide 4-H activities.

Responsible for implementing programs and providing information to help individuals live healthier lives by minimizing environmental health threats. Some efforts are targeted to the population at large, such as monitoring of public and private drinking water supplies, food safety in restaurants, fire safety in hotels, and permitting of mass gatherings. Other programs target specific needs such as interventions to prevent illness from rabies, lead poisoning, failing septic systems, and sale of tobacco products to minors.

Anyone interested in learning practical information about healthy eating can participate in our nutrition education classes. This includes families with children, day care providers, youth groups, seniors, teens, and adults. Our classes include the hands-on creation of a healthy recipe that participants can then taste.
