Offers this 1200-hour program for you to prepare to take the National Certifying Examination as a Surgical Technologist. A Surgical Technologist works closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist and registered nurse to set up and assist in all type of surgical procedures. You will learn how to perform many duties that help keep the operating room functioning safely before, during and after operations. Practice the skillful handling and passing of surgical instruments and supplies, sterilizing operating room equipment and maintaining inventory in BOCES’ simulated Operating Room. BOCES’ program offers a low student-to-teacher ratio for highly personalized instruction. Students are assigned to a clinical site at one of Long Island’s excellent health care facilities and spend 590 hours working under the guidance of an experienced health care professional. The Youth Services Program provides employment skills development which includes how to write a resume, prepare for an interview, time management and conflict resolution. This program also includes a job match service that provides information about jobs available in the local community and support services for the students and adults who care for (and about) them. Students enjoy hands on learning practicing on classmates, mannequins and clinic clients as they study hairstyling, coloring, perms and relaxers, make-up techniques, manicures and business practices. Successful completion of the Cosmetology program at Western Suffolk BOCES prepares you to sit for the New York State Cosmetology licensing exam and includes Hair Extensions certification. Develops skilled workers through a combined program of learning a skilled trade through training on-the-job and learning the related technical knowledge in a classroom or through correspondence courses. Benefits include a reliable source of trained workers, less turnover and improved employee relations. An apprenticeship training program begins with a detailed job analysis. Then a training program is designed to ensure the apprentice masters the full spectrum of job functions, attains the knowledge necessary to exercise independent judgement, and subscribes to the highest standards of professional conduct. To become an apprentice, you must be 18 years old, or 16 years old with parental approval. The length of training varies from one to six years, depending on the occupation. Offers a college internship program for students who have a strong interest in law enforcement and/or are currently enrolled in criminal justice courses. This unique program is designed to give college students hands on experience with all of the different units our agency has to offer, including popular visits with the Marine Bureau, Firearms, and K9 units. The interns also witness how outside agencies work hand in hand with one another as they visit units run by the Suffolk County Police Department, the Office of the Medical Examiner, and the Suffolk County Legislature. Interns visit both correctional facilities, the firearms range, the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course, the Suffolk County Crime Lab, the Warrant Squad, and the Domestic Violence Bureau. These visits allow students to work alongside officers in each area to give them knowledge, experience, and help them to make informed choices about a career in law enforcement.
