Assists groups and organizations, schools, and businesses after a crisis, disaster, or a critical incident. Team members certified in Critical Incident Stress Management immediately assess the needs of individuals and the group affected at the scene of the incident. A Critical Incident Stress Debriefing will take place 24-72 hours after an incident and provides a confidential format for individuals to discuss the incident as it relates to their thoughts, perceptions, and feelings, in order to reduce the impact of individual or group stress.

Responsible for responding to the scene of an incident to perform preliminary investigation on cause and manner of death, then releases a final autopsy report once investigation and testing is completed. The coroner's office may take custody of a person who has died in various circumstances including but not limited to a young person without documented medical history, a person with no legal next-of-kin or one that cannot be determined or identified during the initial investigation, or any person who has died due to unnatural circumstances. Also plays a role in developing the county’s Mass casualty/Fatality Plan in preparation for any catastrophic incidents, which could be caused by natural, accidental, criminal or infectious means. Does not provide copies of death certificates, contact NYS Department of Health or the local town, village, or city clerk in the municipality where the death occurred.

Responsible for supporting operations of the county's Hazardous Materials/WMD Response Team (ECHMRT), Erie County Medical Reserve Corps and Western New York Stress Reduction Program. Operates the County-run Ambulance Service. Provides outreach through the Reach out to 911 program. EMS Staff responds to emergencies and disasters around the county including MCI-Mass Casualty Incidents, School Bus accidents and those events requiring specialized emergency medical services and/or coordination of EMS resources.
