Learn the skills and knowledge necessary to be a valuable member of today’s health care team as you work under the direction of nurses, doctors or other authorized health care provider. The School of Practical Nursing at Western Suffolk BOCES is approved by the New York State Education Department and accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. BOCES’ program offers a low student-to-teacher ratio that allows many opportunities for highly personalized, hands-on instruction. The School prepares students to work with patients and medical staff in medical facilities including nursing homes. Students are then assigned to a clinical site at one of Long Island’s excellent health care facilities where they work under the guidance of an experienced health care professional. Classes are held at Wilson Technological Center’s Northport campus. Those who successfully complete the New York State-approved Practical Nursing program at BOCES meet the qualifications for admission to the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN). Provides a Geriatric Resource Center with a wide range of resources along with a Speaker's Bureau. Innovations in the geriatric field and clinical updates are disseminated through interdisciplinary courses, team training, distance learning and workshops.

Services are provided on an hourly basis through private pay, long term care insurance, Office of the Aging, Medicaid, Workers Compensation, Managed Long Term care (MLTC), and Mainstream Managed Care (MCO) programs.

Evaluates children and adolescents from families referred for elevated risk. Offers specialized comprehensive family based dietary and lifestyle modifications for children with elevated cholesterol and obesity. Prescribes dietary supplements, exercise and medication as indicated.

Provides licensed and registered child care providers caring for children birth to 3 years old with technical assistance, training and appropriate resources.

Offers a non-credit-bearing certificate program leading to eligibility for the licensure examination and PN licensure. This program includes classroom theory, theoretical knowledge, and clinical experiences to prepare students to take the NCLEX-PN for licensure as a Practical Nurse and the opportunity to pursue advanced college training. The Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing offers the following programs each September: An 11-month, full-time day program which meets September through August, M-F from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; A 17-month, part-time evening program which meets September through June, M-Th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. AND the following September through March, M-F from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and A part-time day program is available to seniors enrolled in the high schools of the first supervisory district which meets September through June, M-F from 7:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. OR 12:00 noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Bixhorn Technical Center in Bellport, NY; AND will meet the following September through March, M-F from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for Level II post secondary at the Adult Education Center in Brentwood. Provides professional and paraprofessional home healthcare personnel services to elderly, ill and physically challenged individuals in their homes, and, to a lesser extent, it provides healthcare facility staffing services for hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.

Offers a course in Dental Assisting. Train to become an important part of a professional dental office. Learn the necessary skills to work with a dental team to provide patients with an excellent experience. Prepare to assist with all dental procedures including four-handed dentistry, tray set-ups, infection control and sterilization techniques. Study dental anatomy, oral cancer detection, radiology, and the uses of instruments and equipment. In addition, participate in an externship program and gain administrative and communication skills to make a dental office run smoothly. Upon completion, you will be ready to work in all types of dental offices. Additional courses in CPR and OSHA-10 are offered. Provides coordinated health care and support services to the disabled and chronically ill in their homes. Nurses monitor patient and supervise aides in patient's home bimonthly. Social workers evaluate patients and obtain needed services. Through the doctor the patient can receive needed therapies such as speech, physical, occupational, respiratory and nutrition therapy.
