Assists clients with filling out paperwork to file for a divorce. Typically takes on simple, uncontested divorces.

Fundamental to the Community Independence Program is the belief that individuals with developmental disabilities can and should be given the opportunity to determine the content and character of the service they receive, identify the goals to which they aspire, and choose the individuals that would provide them with assistance in identifying and attaining their goals.

Takes in stray, abandoned, and abused animals, assists with complaints of domestic animals which have attacked people or other animals. Also offers the opportunity for people to adopt a pet.

Family Defense Unit which helps parents navigate the challenges of the Child Welfare system. Provides free legal representation to clients who are denied or cut off from SSD or SSI benefits.

Respite program offering social and recreational activities for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Caseworkers and Senior Citizen Advocates from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging will answer questions and give assistance from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. on weekdays. Assistance may include: Information and Referrals; Guiding and connecting caregivers to needed services for themselves and their family members and Assisting caregivers with applications for benefit programs.

Provides health insurance coverage to people 65 years of age or older, people who have drawn Social Security benefits on account of disability for at least 24 consecutive months, and insured workers and their dependents. Provides new or replacement social security numbers and/or cards. Pays benefits to disabled workers under Full Retirement Age, and to their dependents, as well as survivors of insured workers - widows or widowers at age 60 years and older, widows/widowers who have entitled children 16 years of age and younger in their care, and widows between ages 50 and 60 meeting disability-related requirement. Makes monthly payments to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. Benefits are payable to people ages 65 years and older without disabilities. Connects individuals receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits with free employment services.

Hears civil cases outside the authority of the lower courts, such as civil matters involving higher dollar amounts, divorce, separation, and annulment proceedings within Albany County.

Offers space to the public for recreational use. Most parks provide picnic pavilions, trails and playgrounds and follow a carry-in, carry-out policy for trash. Pools available at two locations as well as an ice rink. City also sponsors many youth and adult sports leagues and camps, tot programs, Arts and Crafts programs, and community special events such as Kid's Day and the Great Pumpkin Hunt that are available at the various parks.

Offered at NUMC, regular cancer screening is the most potent weapon we have in the battle against this invasive and relentless disease. We urge you to make an appointment to be screened. If you are uninsured, or facing financial hardship, this potentially lifesaving Cancer Services Program, sponsored by the New York State Department of Health, can help. This is a comprehensive cancer-screening and counseling service that directs individuals to designated medical facilities, like NUMC, where breast, cervical and colorectal screenings are regularly performed free of charge for women and men who qualify for eligibility. If required, additional diagnostic testing is covered. There are also cancer support groups and legal advocates who are ready to advise patients and family members on social, financial and legal matters. Call for detailed information.
