Assists individuals receiving assistance (Temporary Assistance, Medicaid, and Food Stamps) to apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability (SSDI). Also assists clients in filing appeals of denials for SSI and SSDI.

Monitors new building conditions and construction and oversees the maintenance of older multi-family structures. Enforces the state and local building codes and housing standards and ordinances. Reviews applications for permits of new buildings, repairs, alterations, signs, and rooming houses. Accepts complaints from tenants about conditions the landlord fails to resolve.

Responsible for the operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of the pipes, drains, and manholes that constitute the sewage collection system which transports liquid waste to treatment facilities.

Provides protection for local residents in various ways, including with a SWAT unit for more serious criminal activity, along with a K-9 unit to help with drug tracking and a Marine unit which help patrol the waterways.
