Offers clinical, operational or administrative volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of 50 hours over a period of three months, whether as a learning opportunity for students or merely as a way of giving back to one's community. Clinical assignments in our residential and community-based programs may include participation in our recreational program, agency-sponsored events and leisure and relaxation therapy. Volunteers also provide one-to-one attention to our program participants, such as reading a book, taking a person for a walk, or simply serving as a "big brother or big sister." A volunteer is selected on the basis of individual interest, skill, and experience.

Provides temporary shelter to homeless families, singles and childless couples. The office has a contractual relationship with not-for-profit agencies for the provision of case management services, shelter facilities, transitional residences, and emergency apartments.

We provide speech, language, and hearing evaluations and therapy to individuals and groups of all ages and all types of communication disorders. The HY Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders provides speech-language evaluations and intervention in-person and remotely, via telepractice. The Town of Hempstead Housing Authority owns and operates 1,309 apartments at 14 separate locations throughout the Town of Hempstead. The primary goal of the Housing Authority has been, and will continue to be, our commitment to provide safe, sanitary, housing in the most efficient and cost effective manner. There are efficiency (EFF) apartments for single persons over the age of 62; 1-bedroom (1 BR) apartments for couples with head of household 62 years or older. The Housing Authority also accepts applications for family apartments consisting of 2 to 4 bedrooms, available at 2 of our complexes.

An outreach program to help improve and maintain personal health and environmental living conditions. The goal of the program is to promote healthy neighborhoods by keeping residents aware of the variety of medical, social and environmental services available to them locally. Outreach staff visit residents, at the residents request, an inspection of their home is also performed to be sure that no environmental health hazards or problems exist. If environmental health hazards or problems do exist, our staff will direct them to the agency best able to help.

Advises governor, legislature, and state agencies on issues facing persons with disabilities. Initiates and shapes innovative programs and identifies areas for improvement. Fosters coordination through systems advocacy and facilitates community development activities. Provides technical assistance on barrier-free design, legal rights,assistive technology to local governments, providers, families, and maintains toll-free information and referral service.

Provides a supportive living facility for men who have completed an alcohol or drug treatment program. The length of stay is one year, along with scheduled house meetings, communal meals and activities, with an emphasis on continued recovery, relapse prevention, vocational and employment support, and enhancing sober and independent living skills.
