Students who have traditionally experienced difficulties in their home school often need a new and different learning environment to be successful. At the Cortland Alternative School, students in grades 9-12 are placed into small family groups that meet weekly to focus on team building, problem-solving, and building self-esteem. In addition, each student meets regularly with his or her family group leader to work on individual goals and monitor progress in the program. Rigorous academics are stressed through project-based learning opportunities that incorporate problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration and communications skills. The goal of the program is to produce high school graduates who are college and career ready and will become productive, contributing members of their communities.

It involves intake, investigation, and assessment of referrals of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of qualifying vulnerable adults. APS workers develop services plans with eligible clients to remedy physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, or to address unmet, essential needs of adults.

The Sexual Assault and Crime Victims Assistance program, provides specialized services to sexual assault survivors, their families and friends, as well as crime victims.

Serves consumers whose transportation needs cannot be met by Medicaid transportation and to ensure they have access to medical appointments and HIV related services. Individuals are provided cab rides, bus tokens, or gas cards to meet with their medical providers.

Offers highly personalized financial education program that gives consumers tools necessary to gain control over their finances.

Provides county residents who are age 60, and older, with nutritious meal options as well as nutrition counseling and education. Other services offered include health and welfare counseling, shopping assistance, outreach, transportation, escort services, and information and referrals to local resources. Services are offered at all six senior centers operated by the Rensselaer County Department for the Aging.
